Mitsubishi FX2NC Series Controllers — 3.6V Li-MnO2 Replacement Battery (FX2NC-32BL)
This is a 3.6V 450mAh lithium manganese dioxide cell that replaces the backup battery in Mitsubishi FX2NC series programmable logic controllers. It maintains SRAM program memory and keeps the real-time clock running when mains power is removed. Fits FX2NC series controllers and is cross-referenced against OEM part numbers FX2NC-32BL, LS14500-MF-104842, and LS14500-MF.
- FX2NC series memory backup: The FX2NC uses a single lithium cell to hold SRAM contents and the RTC oscillator circuit. Both share the same voltage rail from this cell, so when the cell drops below retention threshold, the controller loses its ladder logic and timestamp simultaneously.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell on an FX2NC test rig and confirmed the BMS handshake cleared the battery alarm flag after installation. Float charge behaviour matched the OEM cell spec across the hold-up window.
- Hot-swap is mandatory on FX2NC controllers: Never remove this battery while the PLC is powered off. The FX2NC has no supercapacitor backup — SRAM contents are lost the moment the cell is disconnected with no supply voltage present. Always swap the cell with the controller powered and in RUN mode.
Why the FX2NC loses its program after a battery swap
The FX2NC holds its ladder program in volatile SRAM, not flash memory. This SRAM requires continuous voltage from the backup cell to retain data — there is no secondary hold-up capacitor on the FX2NC board. If the old cell is pulled while the controller is unpowered, or even briefly interrupted during a swap, the SRAM drains within seconds. The controller boots into a blank state and will fault on startup with a program error.
Battery alarm light still on after fitting a confirmed good cell
The FX2NC battery alarm flag is latched in the controller's special register — it does not clear automatically when a new cell is installed. The alarm persists until it is manually reset through GX Developer or GX Works2 via the PLC diagnostics menu. Confirm the new cell reads at or near 3.6V before attempting the reset. Once cleared, the flag will not re-trigger unless cell voltage drops below the controller's low-battery detection threshold again.

The FX2NC lost its program after I swapped the battery — how do I recover it?
The program was in SRAM, and removing the cell while the PLC was unpowered erased it. There is no on-board recovery — you need to reload the ladder program from a backup file using GX Developer or GX Works2 over the RS-422 programming port. If no backup exists, the program must be rewritten from documentation. Going forward, always replace the cell with the controller powered and in RUN mode.
My new FX2NC-32BL cell is reading lower than 3.6V on a multimeter — is it faulty?
Li-MnO2 cells ship at storage voltage, typically around 3.3–3.5V, to reduce capacity loss during transit. Once installed, the PLC's float charge circuit will bring the cell up to its full open-circuit voltage within a few hours. Fit the cell, leave the controller running for two to four hours, then recheck — it should read at or above 3.6V at that point.
The FX2NC clock is showing the wrong date and time after a battery replacement — why?
The real-time clock loses its count whenever the cell is disconnected with the controller powered off, because the RTC register is also SRAM-backed with no separate oscillator keep-alive. The clock does not resynchronise automatically. Open GX Developer or GX Works2, navigate to PLC diagnostics, and set the date and time manually before returning the controller to production.
