This is a 4.8V, 4000mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Crestron SmarTouch 1550, SmarTouch 1700, ST-1550, and ST-1700 touchscreen remote controls. These remotes are used in professional AV systems to manage lighting, audio, video, and environment controls. It replaces OEM part number ST-BTPN directly.

  • SmarTouch 1550 and 1700 compatibility: Both the ST-1550 and ST-1700 use the same 4.8V cell pack with identical connector and BMS handshake requirements. A single battery revision covers the full range without modification.

Why the SmarTouch 1550 shows full charge but loses power quickly

Ni-MH cells develop memory effect when repeatedly topped off from a partial charge state. The dock reads a surface voltage and terminates charging early, leaving actual capacity well below 4000mAh. This is common in AV installs where the remote sits docked most of the time and only gets light daily use. Run one full discharge-to-shutoff cycle, then charge uninterrupted overnight to restore accurate capacity tracking.

SmarTouch remote works only at close range after battery swap

The IR LED in the SmarTouch 1550 needs a stable voltage above roughly 4.2V to drive full transmission power. A battery sitting near end-of-charge or with degraded cells drops below that threshold under IR burst load, reducing effective range significantly. If the remote only responds within a metre of the receiver, the battery is the first thing to check — not the IR sensor. Swap in a fully charged pack and retest at normal operating distance.

I just installed the new battery but the SmarTouch 1550 won't turn on at all — what's wrong?

The most likely cause is reversed polarity. The ST-BTPN connector is keyed, but it's worth confirming the pack is fully seated and the connector is clicked in — a half-seated connection breaks the circuit the same way a backwards cell would. If the remote still won't power on, place the battery on charge in the dock for at least two hours before testing again, as a deeply discharged Ni-MH pack may not have enough voltage to boot the remote immediately on install.

The SmarTouch remote drains the battery much faster than the original — is something wrong with the pack?

Faster-than-normal drain in a docked touchscreen remote usually points to a stuck or partially actuated button creating a constant processor load rather than a fault in the battery itself. Check that no button is physically jammed or wedged down — even slight pressure keeps the remote's MCU active instead of sleeping. If no button is stuck, verify the dock contacts are clean and making full contact, since a dirty contact can cause the charger to cycle on and off repeatedly, stressing the cells.

The SmarTouch 1550 touchscreen is dim and sluggish even with a charged battery — what causes that?

This symptom points to voltage sag under display load. Ni-MH cells that have been shallow-cycled for months lose their ability to sustain voltage when the backlit touchscreen draws current. The pack may read 4.8V at rest but sag below the display's minimum threshold under load. Run a full discharge-recharge conditioning cycle — drain the remote completely until it shuts off, then charge uninterrupted — and retest. If the sluggishness persists after one full cycle, the cells have degraded and the pack needs replacing.
