Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Topcon SX-1 / GM52 Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BT-1A)
This 7.4V 2200mAh Li-ion battery replaces the Topcon BT-1A, CGR-B/201LC, and BDC71 packs. It fits the SX-1, GP-SX1, and GM52 total stations — survey-grade instruments used for distance, angle, and coordinate measurement in the field. Voltage and capacity match OEM spec exactly.
- SX-1 / GP-SX1 / GM52 platform fit: These three models share the same battery bay geometry, 7.4V supply rail, and BMS handshake protocol. One pack covers all three without modification or adapter.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through a simulated survey load — EDM firing, tilt sensor polling, and backlit display active simultaneously. The BMS held voltage without spurious cutoff across the full discharge curve.
- First-use calibration on the SX-1: After installing a new pack, run a full calibration cycle through the SX-1 instrument menu before field deployment. The instrument maps battery state during calibration — skipping this step causes premature low-battery warnings during your first measurement session.
BMS lockout after the SX-1 sat unused in a carry case for months
Li-ion cells self-discharge at roughly 2–3% per month. After several months in a carry case, a pack can drop below 2.5V per cell — the threshold where most BMS circuits lock the output rail to prevent further discharge damage. At that point the instrument shows nothing when powered on, and the charger may also refuse to begin a charge cycle. To recover the pack, use a charger with a trickle or recovery mode that applies a low current until cell voltage climbs back above 3.0V per cell. Once recovery completes, charge fully to 8.4V before reinstalling.
SX-1 shuts down mid-measurement with the battery indicator still showing charge
This happens when the EDM fires a distance measurement while the tilt sensor and display are drawing current simultaneously — the combined load pulls voltage below the BMS trip threshold for a fraction of a second. An aged or partially discharged cell cannot sustain that peak draw, so the BMS cuts the rail even though the resting voltage looked acceptable. It is not a firmware fault or a connection issue. Charge the pack fully to 8.4V and retest — if the shutdowns continue at full charge, the cell capacity has degraded below usable range and the pack needs replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions
The SX-1 won't charge a brand-new pack — the charger light just blinks and stops. What's happening?
A blinking-then-stopping charge cycle usually means the pack arrived below the charger's minimum acceptance voltage after transit and storage. The BMS has latched into protection mode. Use a charger with a recovery or boost mode to feed a low current — around 100mA — until cell voltage rises above 3.0V per cell (6.0V total). Once the BMS releases, the normal charge cycle will start and complete normally.
Readings reset or jump during a logging session even though the battery looks fine — is this a battery issue?
Yes, this is a voltage dropout under sustained sensor load. When the EDM and tilt sensor both draw current during a long logging run, a partially discharged pack sags below the instrument's stable operating voltage momentarily, causing the processor to reset mid-session. The display may show adequate charge because it reads resting voltage, not loaded voltage. Charge the pack to 8.4V before any extended logging session and retest — if dropouts continue at full charge, the cells have capacity-faded beyond the pack's usable range.
The SX-1 powers on fine but cuts out every time it tries to transfer data to a PC via USB — why?
USB data transfer adds a sustained draw on top of the display and active instrument circuits — that combined load is higher than normal survey use. If the pack is below roughly 70% state of charge, the voltage sag under that combined draw trips the BMS cutoff. The fix is straightforward: charge fully to 8.4V before any USB transfer session, and keep the instrument on the charger if your data cable supports simultaneous charge-and-transfer. Do not attempt bulk data exports with a partially discharged pack.
