Zenpad Z8 shutting down at 15–25% remaining

This happens when the fuel gauge IC is still calibrated to the old, degraded cell. The reported percentage no longer maps to actual cell voltage. Under combined display and WiFi load, real cell voltage drops faster than the gauge tracks, and the BMS triggers a hard cutoff before the percentage reaches zero. Fast charging not available after battery replacement

The Zenpad Z8 charge IC uses a USB-PD negotiation handshake that can reset to standard 5V charging after a battery swap. This is a firmware-level behaviour — the charge controller defaults to a safe baseline until it completes one full accepted charge cycle on the new cell. Plug in using the original charger and cable, let it charge uninterrupted to 100% without unplugging mid-cycle. After that first complete cycle, fast charge negotiation typically resumes on the next plug-in.

This is fuel gauge drift — the Android battery stats file still holds charge-curve data from the old cell. The gauge interpolates capacity against a curve that no longer matches the new cell's chemistry profile. A single full discharge to automatic shutoff followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100% rewrites the active calibration against the new cell. If jumpy readings persist after two full cycles, clear battery stats in recovery mode before running another full cycle.

The ZT581KL gets noticeably warm during the first few charges after swapping the battery — is that normal?

Yes. The charge IC runs a conditioning pass on a new cell — it applies a slightly higher charge current during the first few cycles while the cell's internal resistance stabilises. Surface warmth during this phase is expected and drops off after two or three full charge cycles. If the tablet stays hot to the touch after the fourth charge cycle or the case deforms, stop charging and check that the connector is fully seated and there is no flex on the cell.
