Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Avaya MM588 — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (4.998.020.274)

This is a 3.7V, 950mAh Li-ion replacement battery for the Avaya MM588 cordless DECT handset. It replaces OEM part 4.998.020.274. Fit it when the original no longer holds a charge or the handset dies faster than it used to.

  • MM588 handset compatibility: The MM588 runs a single-cell 3.7V Li-ion pack with a specific connector orientation and cell footprint. This battery matches those physical and electrical specs — same cell dimensions (61.28 × 50.19 × 10.21mm), same nominal voltage, same BMS communication the handset expects.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this battery through charge and discharge on the MM588 platform. The BMS held the charge threshold correctly and the handset recognised the pack without showing a fault indicator on the base station.
  • First-charge protocol for the MM588: After fitting, seat the handset in the base and leave it for a full charge cycle without interruption. Li-ion cells shipped at partial state of charge need one complete cycle to calibrate the handset's charge indicator to the new pack's actual capacity.

Talk time shorter than expected after replacing the MM588 battery

A new Li-ion cell ships at around 40–60% state of charge. If you start using the handset before the battery reaches full charge, the handset's fuel gauge calibrates against that partial capacity and reads short from that point forward. One full uninterrupted charge cycle from near-empty to full resets the calibration. After that, the handset's battery indicator should track accurately against the 950mAh rated capacity.

Handset not pairing with the base after battery swap

Removing the battery from a DECT handset cuts all power to the radio module, which can wipe the pairing data stored in volatile memory. The MM588 handset may show no signal or fail to register on the base after a cold swap. To fix this, re-register the handset from the base station menu — typically found under system or handset settings. Once registration completes, the handset resumes normal DECT operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

My MM588 handset drains completely overnight even when it's sitting in the base — is the battery faulty?

This usually means the handset is not making full contact with the base charging pins, not a faulty cell. Check that the handset clicks fully into the cradle and that the charge indicator light activates. If the contacts on the handset or base look oxidised, clean them with a dry cloth. A properly seated MM588 draws standby current from the base, not from the battery.

The base station shows no charge light or an error light after I fitted the new battery — what's wrong?

A Li-ion cell shipped at low state of charge can sit below the voltage threshold the base station checks before starting a charge cycle. Leave the handset seated in the base for 15–20 minutes — the charger circuit will detect the rising cell voltage and the charge indicator should activate. If the light still does not come on, check the base power adapter is supplying voltage and reseat the handset firmly.

The MM588 loses range near the edges of the office after the battery swap — the old battery was fine there.

DECT transmit power on the MM588 handset scales with available battery voltage. A new Li-ion cell at partial charge delivers lower sustained voltage under RF load, which causes the radio to pull back its transmit power and shorten effective range. Charge the handset fully — to 4.2V at the cell — before using it in areas where signal was previously marginal. After a full charge cycle, range should match what the original battery provided.
