Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Bosch HFG / HFE Series — 4.8V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (B165)
This is a 4.8V, 1200mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Bosch HFG, HFE-85, HFE-165, and HFE-455 two-way radios. It matches OEM part numbers B165, 8697322501, 8697322504, and 8697322963. Dimensions are 69.70 × 46.50 × 25.60mm — direct physical fit into the original battery compartment.
- HFG and HFE platform compatibility: These four models share the same 4.8V NiMH battery architecture, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. One battery pack covers the entire HFE range without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through charge and discharge cycles on HFE-series hardware. The BMS accepted the new cell chemistry without fault codes, and the charger dock transitioned cleanly from charge to ready state.
- First-insertion contact check: If the charger dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The Bosch HFE dock requires a clean contact cycle to complete the BMS handshake before charging begins.
Why the HFG cuts out mid-transmission on a freshly inserted battery
The HFG transmit circuit draws a short current spike the moment PTT is pressed. On a battery sitting at storage voltage — typically around 4.6V for a four-cell NiMH pack — the BMS can interpret that spike as an overcurrent event and briefly interrupt output. This is not a faulty battery. One or two complete charge cycles bring the cells to full operating voltage and stabilise internal resistance, eliminating the dropout. If the issue persists after two full charges, check the contact strip for corrosion before concluding the pack is defective.
Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after fitting the new pack
The HFE-series radios use a simple voltage-threshold bar indicator — each bar corresponds to a voltage band, not a fuel gauge calculation. A new NiMH cell ships at storage voltage, which sits below the top threshold, so the radio displays one bar short of full. This is normal behaviour and not a capacity defect. Charge the pack fully before drawing conclusions — once the charger dock goes green and the pack reaches approximately 5.6V at rest, the indicator will display correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions
The HFG transmits fine for the first few seconds then the audio drops out — is this the battery or the radio?
This is almost always a PTT transmit-spike issue with a new or recently stored NiMH pack. When the cell voltage is at storage level, the BMS trips briefly on the current surge the moment you key up. Run two full charge-discharge cycles to bring the cells to operating voltage and reduce internal resistance. If dropout continues after two cycles, measure resting voltage — it should read at or above 5.5V after a full charge.
My HFE-165 charger dock LED blinks continuously and never switches to solid green — what's wrong?
A continuously blinking dock LED on the HFE-165 usually means the pack voltage is too low for the dock's acceptance threshold. This happens after extended storage when NiMH cells self-discharge below the recovery floor. Remove the pack, wipe the gold contacts on both the battery and the dock with a dry cloth, then reseat firmly and allow up to 90 minutes for the dock to trickle-charge the pack up to acceptance voltage. If the dock still blinks after that period, the cells may have dropped below the BMS recovery threshold — check that resting voltage is above 4.0V before concluding the pack is unrecoverable.
The radio runs at noticeably reduced TX power toward the end of a shift even though the bar indicator still shows two bars — what causes that?
NiMH cells show voltage sag under sustained RF output load, meaning the displayed bar count lags behind actual available power. The HFE platform's voltage-threshold indicator reads resting voltage, not load voltage, so two bars on screen can coexist with a meaningful drop in transmit output under sustained keying. This is a chemistry characteristic of NiMH under high-draw conditions, not a defective pack. Swap in a freshly charged battery for the second half of a long shift and reserve the depleted pack for charging — do not rely solely on the bar indicator to judge mid-shift capacity.
