Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Brother Superpower Note PN4400 Series — 6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (BA-400)
This is a 6V, 1500mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Brother Superpower Note portable electronic notebook series. It carries OEM part number BA-400 and fits the PN4400, PN5700DS, PN8500MDS, and PN8500MDSE, along with four additional models in the same line. Capacity is 9Wh, matching the original cell specification.
- PN4400 series compatibility: These models share the same 6V battery bay, connector pinout, and charge-control circuit. A single BA-400 cell covers the full range without any wiring or adapter changes.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on a Brother Superpower Note unit. The charge circuit accepted the Ni-MH chemistry correctly, the protection circuit tripped at the expected voltage floor, and the device powered on cleanly at full charge.
- First-cycle conditioning for the PN series: After fitting this cell, run the device until it shuts off from low battery, then charge it uninterrupted to full. The PN series charge controller recalibrates its fuel gauge against the actual cell capacity during that first complete cycle — skip it and the battery indicator will read inaccurately for weeks.
Why the PN8500MDS battery indicator stays stuck after a cell swap
The Brother Superpower Note line uses a simple fuel gauge IC that tracks cumulative charge and discharge against a stored reference value. When you swap to a new cell, that reference value is still calibrated to the old, degraded battery. The gauge reads the new cell as though it were the worn-out one, so the display appears stuck or jumps erratically. One complete discharge-to-cutoff followed by a full uninterrupted charge resets the reference and brings the indicator back into accurate range.
Device shuts down abruptly while still showing charge remaining
Ni-MH cells have a steep voltage cliff near end-of-discharge — voltage drops sharply in the final capacity window. If the battery indicator is not recalibrated after a swap, the device cuts power before the gauge reaches zero because the voltage collapses faster than the uncalibrated gauge predicts. This is not a fault with the replacement cell. Run one full conditioning cycle; the charge controller will map the new cell's actual voltage curve and the shutdowns will stop. Target a resting voltage of around 7.2V at full charge across the six cells.

Frequently Asked Questions
The battery indicator on my PN4400 has been stuck at the same level for three days — is the new cell faulty?
The fuel gauge IC on the PN series holds a reference value from the old cell and does not automatically update when you fit a replacement. It reads the new cell against that stale calibration, so the display appears frozen or inaccurate. Run the device until it powers off from low charge, then charge it fully without interruption. After that single cycle the gauge recalibrates against the new cell and the indicator moves correctly.
My Brother Superpower Note shuts off suddenly while the display still shows 30% battery remaining — what causes that?
Ni-MH voltage drops steeply in the last portion of the discharge curve. If the fuel gauge is not yet calibrated to the replacement cell, the device hits the undervoltage cutoff before the indicator reaches zero — the voltage collapses faster than the uncalibrated gauge expects. This is a calibration issue, not a defective cell. Complete one full discharge-to-shutoff cycle followed by an uninterrupted full charge and the premature cutoffs will stop.
The Superpower Note PN8500MDS won't start charging after I fitted the new BA-400 — charge light doesn't come on at all.
A deeply discharged Ni-MH cell can sit below the minimum voltage threshold that the PN series charge circuit requires before it will begin a charge cycle. Leave the battery connected to the charger for 15–20 minutes without interruption — many Ni-MH chargers include a trickle pre-charge mode that will slowly bring the cell up to the threshold voltage before switching to normal charge. If the charge indicator still does not activate after 30 minutes, check that the cell contacts in the battery bay are clean and making firm contact, then retry with the device fully powered off.
