Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Caire Inc AirSep Freestyle 3 — 14.8V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BT015-1)
This 14.8V, 3600mAh lithium-ion battery replaces OEM part numbers BT015-1 and BT018-1S in the AirSep Freestyle 3 and Freestyle 5 portable oxygen concentrators. It powers the concentrator during mobile use when patients need oxygen therapy away from a stationary oxygen source. Voltage and capacity match the original cell specifications for these units.
- Freestyle 3 and Freestyle 5 platform: Both models run the same 14.8V four-cell Li-ion architecture and share a common BMS handshake protocol, which is why BT015-1 and BT018-1S cross-reference across the platform. The connector pinout and BMS communication lines are identical between units.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through the Freestyle 3 charge-discharge sequence and confirmed the BMS completed capacity registration without triggering a fault code. Charge acceptance matched the OEM profile across the full voltage window from 12.0V to 16.8V.
- Power-on self-test protocol: After installing this battery, let the device complete its full startup self-test sequence without powering it off. Medical-grade concentrators run a BMS verification step at boot — interrupting it locks in a false battery fault that will not clear until the next complete power cycle from rest.
Why the Freestyle 3 alarms low battery with a freshly charged replacement installed
The Freestyle 3 BMS stores a learned capacity model from the previous cell. When a new cell arrives with a different internal resistance profile, the BMS reads the discharge curve as shallower than expected and flags it as low before the actual state of charge drops. This is a calibration issue, not a fault with the battery itself. One full charge-to-discharge cycle on the new cell resets the learned model and clears the alarm behaviour. Run that cycle before clinical use.
Freestyle 3 not completing boot sequence after battery swap
If the concentrator stalls mid-boot after fitting this battery, the cell voltage at rest is likely sitting below the BMS boot-admission threshold — typically around 12.5V — after storage. The BMS interprets sub-threshold voltage as an unsafe or depleted cell and halts the startup sequence as a protective measure. Connect the unit to mains power first and allow a 15-minute pre-charge before attempting to boot on battery alone. Once resting voltage climbs above 13.0V, the boot sequence completes normally.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Freestyle 3 is showing a low battery alarm right after I put in the new fully charged battery — is the battery faulty?
The battery is not faulty. The Freestyle 3 BMS learned its capacity thresholds from the previous cell's internal resistance profile, and a new cell with a fresh profile reads as lower state-of-charge than it actually is. Run one complete charge-to-discharge cycle on the new battery — the BMS recalibrates its model against the new cell's curve and the alarm clears. Do not use the concentrator clinically until that first cycle is complete.
The Freestyle 3 powered off mid-session during the first few uses of the new battery — why is it cutting out early?
Portable oxygen concentrators pull hard during the compression phase of each oxygen pulse, and a new cell's internal resistance is slightly higher in the first 5–10 cycles before the chemistry settles. Under that load spike, the BMS sees a momentary voltage sag that crosses the low-voltage cutoff threshold and shuts the unit down as a precaution. This behaviour typically resolves after 8–10 full charge-discharge cycles as cell resistance drops. Track resting voltage at the end of each session — once it holds above 13.5V after a full session, the cell has conditioned properly.
My Freestyle 3 won't power on at all after the replacement battery sat unused for a few weeks — what happened?
Li-ion cells self-discharge during storage, and if the resting voltage dropped below approximately 12.5V, the Freestyle 3 BMS blocks the boot sequence entirely as a deep-discharge protection measure. Connect the concentrator to mains power and leave it charging for at least 30 minutes before pressing the power button — this allows the charge IC to bring cell voltage back above the BMS admission threshold. Once the cell reaches 13.0V at rest, the unit will boot and charge normally from that point.
