The fix is a slow recovery charge — connect the device to mains power and leave it on charge for a minimum of four hours before attempting to power on. If the device still does not respond after a full charge, measure pack voltage at the terminals; it should read at least 22V before the BMS will clear the lockout.

New Ni-MH cells have higher internal resistance in the first 5–10 cycles, which causes a sharper voltage drop under load than a conditioned cell. The HL20 Rotaflow's BMS interprets this voltage sag as a low-battery cutoff and shuts the device down to protect the load. This behaviour normalises as the cells condition through repeated cycles. Complete at least three full charge-discharge cycles before relying on the battery during active clinical use.
The charge indicator on the HL20 Rotaflow won't reach 100% on the first charge with the new battery — should I be concerned?
The charge IC on the HL20 Rotaflow applies a conservative current limit when it detects a new or unfamiliar cell, which causes the indicator to stall below 100% on the first charge. This is normal behaviour — the device is applying a trickle finish rather than a full termination charge. Let the charge run until the indicator stops advancing, then discharge fully and recharge.
