HL20 Rotaflow will not power on after the battery has been in storage

Ni-MH cells self-discharge during storage, and if the pack voltage drops below roughly 20V, the HL20 Rotaflow BMS enters deep-discharge lockout and will not initiate a boot sequence. The fix is a slow recovery charge — connect the device to mains power and leave it on charge for a minimum of four hours before attempting to power on. If the device still does not respond after a full charge, measure pack voltage at the terminals; it should read at least 22V before the BMS will clear the lockout.

This is a BMS calibration issue, not a defective cell. The HL20 Rotaflow's charge management circuit is set to the OEM cell's voltage signature, and a new Ni-MH pack reads slightly differently until it completes its first full cycle. Run one complete charge-discharge cycle on the device before using it clinically. The alarm should clear after that cycle as the BMS learns the new cell's resting voltage curve.

The HL20 Rotaflow shuts off unexpectedly during use after the battery swap — what's causing it?

New Ni-MH cells have higher internal resistance in the first 5–10 cycles, which causes a sharper voltage drop under load than a conditioned cell. The HL20 Rotaflow's BMS interprets this voltage sag as a low-battery cutoff and shuts the device down to protect the load. This behaviour normalises as the cells condition through repeated cycles. Complete at least three full charge-discharge cycles before relying on the battery during active clinical use.

The charge indicator on the HL20 Rotaflow won't reach 100% on the first charge with the new battery — should I be concerned?

The charge IC on the HL20 Rotaflow applies a conservative current limit when it detects a new or unfamiliar cell, which causes the indicator to stall below 100% on the first charge. This is normal behaviour — the device is applying a trickle finish rather than a full termination charge. Let the charge run until the indicator stops advancing, then discharge fully and recharge. The indicator should reach 100% consistently from the second cycle onward.
