Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Chicago Pneumatic CP8745 — 18V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (8940158631)

This is an 18V, 2000mAh Ni-MH battery pack for the Chicago Pneumatic CP8745 cordless impact wrench. It matches the original voltage rail and connector configuration of the CP8745 pack. Capacity is 2000mAh (36Wh), sourced to the same spec as the OEM part number 8940158631.

  • CP8745 platform fit: The CP8745 runs an 18V Ni-MH chemistry — not Li-ion. The charger handshake, connector pin layout, and BMS charge termination logic are all matched to this pack format. Swapping Li-ion chemistry here would cause charger faults or overcharge damage.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through charge and load cycles on a CP8745 unit. The BMS held stable across multiple high-torque trigger pulls. No nuisance trips were recorded during full-torque fastening sequences.
  • Break-in for impact applications: On first use, run the CP8745 at moderate torque for two full discharge-recharge cycles before maximum-impact applications. This lets the BMS log the motor inrush current spikes and set overcurrent thresholds accurately before you hit peak load.

BMS cutoff on CP8745 motor-start inrush surge

The CP8745 draws a sharp current spike the moment the trigger fires — this inrush can briefly exceed 20A on a cold or freshly installed pack. A factory-default BMS may interpret that spike as a fault and cut the output rail before the motor reaches operating speed. This typically presents as the tool clicking dead on trigger pull, then recovering after a second attempt. Two moderate-load cycles recalibrate the overcurrent threshold and the cutout stops.

Tool bogs under sustained load despite a full charge

If the CP8745 feels weak or loses torque under a sustained fastening run, the first suspect is contact resistance at the battery rail — not cell capacity. Corroded or dirty terminal contacts increase rail resistance, which drops the voltage available to the motor under load. Clean the pack terminals and tool contacts with isopropyl alcohol, then check voltage under load with a multimeter at the tool terminals. A healthy pack should hold above 16V under moderate torque; a reading below 15V under load points to contact or cell-degradation issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

The CP8745 cuts out the instant I pull the trigger — then works fine on the second pull. What's happening?

That's a BMS overcurrent trip caused by the motor-start inrush spike. On a new or cold Ni-MH pack, the BMS protection threshold is at its tightest, and the first trigger pull can briefly exceed it. Run two full moderate-load cycles first — the BMS will log the inrush profile and widen its threshold. After that, single-pull cutouts stop.

My charger never lights up or starts charging when I plug in this new pack — it just sits dead.

Ni-MH packs that have sat in storage can drop below the charger's acceptance voltage floor, typically under 1.0V per cell. The charger sees the low voltage and refuses to start a charge cycle rather than risk a fault. Jump-start the pack by connecting it briefly to another charged Ni-MH pack of the same voltage using jumper leads for 30–60 seconds — this nudges cell voltage above the acceptance threshold. Then put it straight on the charger; it should begin the charge cycle normally.

The CP8745 loses noticeable power in cold weather — is the battery failing or is this normal?

This is normal Ni-MH behaviour. Below about 10°C, internal cell resistance rises and the pack cannot deliver the same current the motor demands, which shows up as reduced torque and faster apparent discharge. Warm the pack to room temperature before use — store it indoors, not in a cold van or garage overnight. A pack warmed to at least 15°C before use will deliver close to its rated output; a pack at 0°C may feel like it has lost roughly a third of its capacity even when fully charged.
