Fits Dell Latitude E5440 and replaces OEM part number VJXMC and equivalent cross-references.
11.1V 6600mAh lithium-ion cell restores full charge capacity to business laptops that shut down prematurely or won't hold charge.
Connector type matches original Dell contacts; no mechanical modification needed for E5440 battery slot.
Bench testing showed the BMS accepted charge current immediately on first insertion; voltage ramp was clean across the full 11.1V window.
After installation, run one complete discharge to hibernation cutoff then charge uninterrupted to 100% — this resets the BIOS battery learn cycle and clears the inaccurate health warning that appears after every cell swap on Dell firmware.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Dell Latitude E5440 / E5540 — 11.1V Li-ion Replacement Battery (VJXMC)

This 11.1V 6600mAh (73.26Wh) Li-ion battery replaces the original cell in the Dell Latitude E5440, E5540, Latitude 14 5000-E5440, and Latitude 15 5000-E5540. It uses the same connector, BMS handshake protocol, and physical form factor as the OEM unit. Swap takes under five minutes with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

  • E5440 and E5540 platform fit: Both the 14-inch E5440 and 15-inch E5540 share the same battery bay dimensions, connector pinout, and Dell SMBus BMS protocol — one cell fits both chassis without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell on an E5540 under mixed CPU and display load. The BMS held voltage above the 10.8V low-cell threshold through full discharge and accepted a clean charge cycle without tripping protection.
  • Post-install calibration on Dell Latitude: After fitting this cell, run one full discharge to hibernate cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. This resets the BIOS battery learn cycle and clears the inaccurate health warning that appears after every cell swap.

BIOS reporting battery health as poor immediately after replacement

Dell's BIOS reads health data from the battery's EEPROM, which stores cycle count, rated capacity, and charge history from the previous cell. When a new cell arrives, the EEPROM data doesn't match real-world charge history yet, so the BIOS flags it as degraded. This is not a fault with the replacement cell. Run one full discharge-to-hibernate and one uninterrupted full charge. After that cycle, the BIOS recalibrates against the new cell's actual data and the health warning clears.

Laptop shuts down at 20–30% charge shown on screen

This happens when the fuel gauge IC hasn't yet mapped the new cell's voltage curve. The OS reads a percentage based on the old cell's discharge profile, so the displayed number no longer matches the cell's actual state of charge. Under full CPU plus display load, the cell hits its low-voltage cutoff before the gauge reaches 0%. Run two to three full discharge-and-charge cycles to allow the fuel gauge IC to recalibrate against the new cell. After calibration, the shutoff point drops back to below 5% indicated charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dell BIOS shows "battery unknown" or 0% right after I installed the new cell — is it dead?

The BIOS reads identity and health data from the battery's EEPROM. A fresh cell has no charge history written yet, so Dell's firmware can't match it to a known state and reports "unknown" or 0%. This is an EEPROM initialisation issue, not a dead battery. Plug in the AC adapter, let the cell charge uninterrupted to 100%, then run one full discharge to hibernate cutoff — after that cycle the BIOS will recognise the cell correctly.

My E5440 shows a different Wh rating in Dell's battery diagnostics than what's listed on the replacement cell — why don't the numbers match?

Dell's diagnostics pull the rated Wh figure directly from the EEPROM on the cell. The EEPROM value reflects the OEM-rated chemistry specification, which can differ slightly from the actual measured capacity of a replacement cell using current-generation Li-ion chemistry. The number in diagnostics is a stored label, not a live measurement. As long as the cell charges to full voltage and holds load, the Wh discrepancy in the diagnostic readout has no effect on real-world performance.

New battery won't charge past 80% on my Latitude E5440 — is the cell faulty?

Dell's BIOS includes a firmware-controlled charge limit that caps charging at 80% when "Battery Extender" or a similar charge-management setting is enabled in Dell Power Manager or the BIOS power settings. The cell itself is not at fault. Open Dell Power Manager (or navigate to BIOS → Power Management → Battery Configuration) and switch the charge mode from "Primarily AC" or "Custom" back to "Adaptive" or "Standard." The battery will then charge to 100%.
