XPS 14z shutting down abruptly at 20–30% charge shown
The fuel gauge IC on the XPS 14z estimates remaining capacity using the old cell's voltage curve. When a new cell is installed, the IC's stored curve no longer matches the actual cell chemistry, so it misreads voltage sag under combined CPU and display load as a critical low. The actual measured Wh after a full charge cycle can differ slightly from that stored figure because cell chemistry and temperature affect real-world capacity. This is an EEPROM-reported versus actual-measured difference, not a defect. Confirm the cell reaches a full 16.8V at end-of-charge before concluding there's a capacity issue.
New battery won't charge past 80% on the XPS 14z — is the battery faulty?
This is almost always a BIOS-controlled charge limit, not a cell fault. Dell's EC firmware includes a Battery Longevity mode that caps charging at 80% to reduce cell stress during regular AC use. Check Dell Power Manager or the BIOS power settings under "Primary Battery Charge Configuration" and switch from "Primarily AC" or "Custom" to "Standard." Once the limit is lifted, the cell charges to the full 16.8V terminal voltage without issue.
