Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.
Delivery and Shipping
Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Emporia RL1 / VF1C — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (AK-RL1)
This 3.7V 800mAh lithium-ion cell replaces the original AK-RL1 battery in the Emporia RL1 and VF1C smartphones. It restores power to phones where the original cell has degraded, stopped charging, or dropped below usable capacity. Voltage and connector match the stock configuration — no modification needed.
- RL1 and VF1C compatibility: Both models run on the same 3.7V single-cell architecture with an identical footprint (55.10 × 30.40 × 5.00mm) and share the AK-RL1 part number. The BMS interface and connector pinout are common across both variants.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on the RL1 platform. The BMS accepted the new cell without rejection flags, and charge termination triggered cleanly at full capacity with no thermal events.
- Fuel gauge recalibration on first use: After installing this cell, disable any fast charge option and run one complete discharge-to-charge cycle before normal use. The fuel gauge IC calibrates its coulomb counter against the new cell's discharge curve — skipping this step causes the percentage display to read inaccurately for several days.
Why the Emporia RL1 reports wrong battery percentage after a cell swap
The RL1's fuel gauge IC builds its charge estimate from the previous cell's discharge curve, stored across charge cycles. When a new cell goes in, that stored curve no longer matches the actual cell behaviour. The gauge reads voltage at rest and maps it against the old model, producing readings that are often 10–20% off. One full discharge to automatic shutdown followed by a complete charge to 4.20V resets the counter and brings the display back in line.
Sudden shutdown at 20–30% remaining on the new cell
This is a voltage cliff failure — not a capacity problem. At 20–30% state of charge, the cell voltage under modem or screen load drops sharply below the BMS cutoff threshold, triggering an immediate shutdown even though the displayed percentage suggests charge remains. A fresh or lightly used cell has a steeper voltage curve at low charge than an aged cell, so the fuel gauge hasn't learned where the cliff sits yet. Run two full discharge cycles and the gauge IC will map the cliff point accurately, stopping the early shutdowns.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Emporia RL1 won't turn on at all after the replacement battery sat in a drawer for months — is the cell dead?
The BMS locks out when cell voltage drops below approximately 2.5V during extended storage, cutting all output to prevent damage. Connect the phone to a wall charger and leave it for 20–30 minutes without pressing the power button — the charge IC trickle-charges the cell back above the BMS recovery threshold before normal charging begins. If the charge LED doesn't activate after 30 minutes, try a different cable and adapter to rule out a current supply issue. Once the LED shows, let the phone charge uninterrupted to 100% before first use.
The phone feels noticeably warm near the battery compartment during the first few charges after fitting the new cell — is something wrong?
A new cell has higher internal impedance than a broken-in cell, so the charge IC dissipates more energy as heat during the first few cycles. This is expected behaviour and typically reduces after three to five full charge cycles as the cell's impedance settles. If the phone becomes hot enough to be uncomfortable to hold, or if heat persists beyond five cycles, remove the phone from the charger and check that the battery contacts are seated flush. Surface warmth during charging on cycles one through three is within normal range for this cell size and charge rate.
Fast charging stopped working after I fitted the new AK-RL1 — the phone charges but slowly even on a fast charger?
On the first cycle after a cell swap, the charge IC may default to standard current until it completes one handshake with the new cell's BMS. Run one full standard charge to 100% and then discharge the phone normally before plugging into the fast charger again. If fast charging still doesn't engage, check that the USB cable supports the required current — many cables marketed as fast-charge cables are wired for data speeds only and cap current at 500mA. Switch to a cable rated at 2A or above and retry.
