Fits Garmin Varia TL rear light; replaces OEM battery 361-00082-00.
This 3.7V, 950mAh lithium-polymer cell powers the radar and LED during rides.
Connector slides into the Varia TL battery slot with a single retention tab.
We tested the pack on Varia TL radar standby and full LED output; BMS settled at 3.65V resting voltage.
Charge fully before a night ride — the driver steps down LED brightness as voltage sags, so partial charge dims output before the low-battery alert triggers.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Garmin Varia RTL510 / TL Series — 3.7V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery (361-00082-00)

This is a 3.7V, 950mAh lithium-polymer cell replacing OEM part 361-00082-00. It fits the Garmin Varia TL, RTL510, and Varia RTL501 rear radar light units. These are cycling safety devices — the battery drives both the LED array and the radar transmitter simultaneously.

  • Varia TL / RTL510 / RTL501 fitment: All three models share the same battery bay dimensions and BMS handshake protocol. The cell footprint is 61.40 × 27.10 × 6.00mm — even a fractional variance causes connector misalignment and intermittent power drops mid-ride.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on RTL510 hardware. The BMS accepted full charge without fault codes and managed the dual radar-plus-LED load without triggering an early protection cutoff.
  • Night-ride charge protocol: Charge the unit fully before a night ride. The LED driver steps down output power as cell voltage decreases — a partially charged cell will drop brightness well before the low-battery indicator appears on your head unit.

Why the Varia RTL510 dims before the battery indicator triggers

The LED driver in these units regulates output by stepping down current as cell voltage sags under load. At roughly 3.5V the driver reduces brightness to stay within its input range. The battery gauge on your Garmin head unit lags behind actual cell voltage, so the light visibly dims before the indicator catches up. This is not a fault — it is the driver protecting itself from an undervoltage condition.

USB charging not accepted after a wet ride

The Varia TL series charges via a magnetic or micro-USB port that sits exposed at the rear of the unit. Water ingress after rain leaves a conductive film across the port contacts, and the charger handshake fails. The unit will not accept charge — and may show no charging indicator at all. Allow the port to dry completely for several hours before connecting, then confirm the charge LED activates within 30 seconds of plugging in.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Varia RTL510 light is dimming on rides but the battery indicator on my Garmin still shows two bars — what's happening?

The LED driver steps down output as cell voltage drops under combined radar and LED load — this happens around 3.5V, before the gauge on your head unit reflects the actual cell state. The indicator lags because it samples voltage at rest, not under load. This is normal driver behaviour, not a fault with the battery or the unit. Charge fully before your next ride and the full brightness range will be restored.

The Varia rear light won't reach its rated lumen output even with a freshly charged battery — is the cell the problem?

Yes, if the cell voltage at full charge is below 4.1V the LED driver cannot pull enough current to hit maximum brightness. An aged or deeply discharged cell that has recovered partially will measure near full on the gauge but sag immediately under the high-draw flash modes. We measured open-circuit voltage on this replacement at 4.18V after a full charge cycle — within spec for the driver's maximum brightness threshold. If output is still low after a full charge, check that the magnetic contacts on the battery connector are clean and seated flush.

My Varia TL won't accept a charge after I rode in heavy rain — the charge LED never comes on at all.

Moisture on the port contacts creates a short across the charging circuit and the unit's protection logic blocks the charge handshake. Do not force a charge — leave the port facing down in a dry room for at least four hours. Once dry, plug in the cable and watch for the amber charge LED within 30 seconds of connection. If the LED still does not activate, inspect the port contacts for corrosion and clean gently with a dry cotton swab before trying again.
