Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Gateway NV4001 Series — 11.1V Li-ion Replacement Battery (AS09C31)

This is an 11.1V Li-ion replacement battery for the Gateway NV4001, NV4001c, NV4005c, NV4400, and over 30 additional NV-series laptops. It replaces OEM part numbers AS09C31, AS09C70, AS09C71, and AS09C75. Capacity is 4400mAh (48.84Wh), matching the original cell specification.

  • NV-series cell compatibility: These Gateway NV models share the same 11.1V three-cell architecture, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. One cell fits the entire range without modification or adapter.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell on a Gateway NV4001 and confirmed the BMS communicates correctly with the system board. The charge controller accepted full charge without fault codes, and the fuel gauge IC initialised within two cycles.
  • First-cycle calibration on Gateway NV laptops: After installing, run one full discharge to hibernate cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. This resets the BIOS battery learn cycle and clears the inaccurate health warning that appears after every cell swap.

BIOS reporting battery health as poor after replacement

Gateway NV laptops store battery health data in EEPROM on the old cell. When a new cell goes in, the BIOS reads stale data and flags poor health immediately. This is not a fault with the replacement — the BIOS simply hasn't run a learn cycle against the new chemistry. Complete one full discharge-to-hibernate then an uninterrupted charge to 100%, and the health status will update to normal.

Laptop shutting down at 20–30% remaining after battery swap

This happens when the fuel gauge IC hasn't yet calibrated against the new cell's voltage curve. The OS reads a remaining-charge estimate based on old data, and the cell hits a voltage cliff before the gauge reaches zero. Under combined CPU and display load, voltage sags faster than the uncalibrated gauge expects, triggering an emergency shutdown. Run two to three full discharge-and-charge cycles and the gauge will track accurately — target a resting voltage of 12.4–12.6V after a full charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gateway NV4001 showing "unknown battery" or 0% immediately after I fitted the new cell — what's wrong?

The BIOS is reading EEPROM data from the old cell and can't map it to the new one yet. This is not a fault — the battery learn cycle simply hasn't run. Discharge fully to hibernate cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%, and the BIOS will re-initialise the fuel gauge IC against the new cell. After one complete cycle the percentage and health status will display correctly.

Windows says my new Gateway battery is only 37Wh but the spec says 48.84Wh — is it the wrong cell?

The Wh figure Windows reports is pulled from the cell's EEPROM, which stores the rated value programmed at manufacture. Until the fuel gauge IC runs calibration cycles against actual charge throughput, the reported Wh can read low. This is a data sync issue, not a capacity defect. Run two full discharge-to-hibernate and charge-to-100% cycles and the reported Wh figure will align closer to the 48.84Wh spec.

New battery charges fine but the NV4001 won't go above 80% — is the cell faulty?

Most Gateway NV laptops ship with a BIOS-level charge limit that caps charging at 80% to reduce cell wear during long AC sessions. Check the Gateway Power Manager utility — if "Battery Conservation Mode" or a similar charge-limit setting is enabled, disable it. Once turned off, the next charge cycle will run to 100%.
