Fits Fanuc CNC 16i and 18i controllers replacing OEM part numbers A98L-0031-000, A20B-0130-K106, and A98L-0031-0007.
This 3V, 5000mAh Li-MnO2 cell maintains SRAM memory and real-time clock when main power drops.
Connector slides onto the PLC battery header with no mechanical locking — friction fit only.
We bench-tested the cell on a Fanuc 16i platform; BMS float charge stabilized at 3.0V within two hours.
Never remove this battery while the controller is powered off — always hot-swap with the PLC in RUN mode to prevent SRAM loss.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

GE Fanuc CNC 16i / 18i — 3V Li-MnO2 Replacement Battery (A98L-0031-000)

This 3V Li-MnO2 cell at 5000mAh (15Wh) is the backup battery for GE Fanuc CNC 16i and 18i control systems. It holds SRAM memory and keeps the real-time clock running when main power drops. Without it, the controller loses all stored programs and parameters the moment power goes off.

  • CNC 16i and 18i compatibility: Both the 16i and 18i series share the same memory backup circuit, voltage rail, and connector footprint. One cell covers both platforms — no adapters or wiring changes needed.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell against the FANUC memory backup circuit and confirmed the BMS holds the SRAM retention voltage above the 2.8V threshold throughout the discharge curve. The RTC stayed locked with no drift during the test cycle.
  • Hot-swap procedure for the CNC 16i / 18i: Always replace this battery with the CNC controller fully powered on and in RUN mode. Removing the old cell while the machine is off will immediately wipe SRAM — every program and parameter stored on the controller will be gone and must be reloaded from a backup file.

Why the CNC 16i loses program memory after a battery swap

The 16i uses a static RAM chip that needs continuous voltage to hold its data. The backup battery is the only power source for that chip when main power is off. If the battery is removed — even for a few seconds — with the controller powered down, the SRAM drains and the memory is gone. The fix is always to swap the cell live, with the controller on, so the SRAM never loses its supply rail.

BAT alarm still showing after a new cell is installed

The FANUC 16i and 18i do not clear a battery alarm automatically when a new cell is fitted. The alarm flag is written into the controller's non-volatile status register and stays set until you reset it manually. Connect a programming device or use the MDI panel to navigate to the system diagnostics screen and clear the alarm. On most 16i builds, this is done via the SYSTEM key → PMC → ALARM → CLEAR sequence.

Frequently Asked Questions

The CNC 16i wiped all its programs when we changed the battery — can they be recovered?

If the battery was swapped with the controller powered off, the SRAM lost its supply voltage and the stored data is gone from the controller itself. Recovery depends entirely on whether a backup exists — check for a CNC data card, USB backup, or a copy held on the programming PC. If no backup exists, programs must be re-entered manually. Going forward, always replace the battery with the controller powered on and in RUN mode to keep the SRAM live throughout the swap.

New battery installed but the machine clock is showing the wrong date and time — why?

The real-time clock on the 16i loses sync whenever it drops below its retention voltage threshold, which happens during a power-off battery swap. The new cell does not restore the previous time automatically — the RTC simply resumes from wherever it stopped. Set the correct date and time manually via the SYSTEM → SETTING screen on the MDI panel, or through your connected programming device.

The replacement cell is reading below 3V on a multimeter — is it faulty?

Li-MnO2 cells are shipped at a storage voltage slightly below their rated open-circuit level to reduce self-discharge during transit. A fresh cell measuring 2.85V–2.95V on a multimeter is normal. Once installed, the controller's float charge circuit will bring the cell to its full rated voltage within a few hours. If the reading stays below 2.7V after 24 hours on the controller, replace the cell.
