Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Geo-Fennel Rotationslaser EL 515 — 3.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (12-1091)
This is a 3.6V 2000mAh Ni-MH rechargeable battery for the Geo-Fennel Rotationslaser EL 515 rotating laser level. It fits directly into the EL 515 battery compartment and matches the original pack's voltage, capacity, and connector. OEM references 12-1091 and GF-D1021 both apply to this unit.
- EL 515 compatibility: The EL 515 runs its laser motor and self-levelling pendulum from a single 3.6V Ni-MH cell pack. Both OEM part numbers (12-1091 and GF-D1021) reference the same physical format — same cell count, same connector orientation, same BMS handshake voltage. No adapter or modification needed.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through charge and discharge cycles on an EL 515 unit. The BMS accepted charge without fault flags, and the pendulum lock and laser motor drew current without tripping the protection circuit at start-up.
- Post-install calibration on the EL 515: Run a full self-levelling cycle immediately after fitting this battery. The EL 515 maps battery state during its levelling routine, and skipping this step causes the low-battery indicator to trigger early on your first job-site session — even with a fully charged pack.
EL 515 shutting down during pendulum self-levelling with a fresh battery
The self-levelling pendulum in the EL 515 draws a short current spike when the motor engages to find horizontal. On a degraded or partially discharged Ni-MH pack, this spike drops cell voltage below the BMS cutoff threshold and the unit shuts off immediately. A new pack at full charge handles this surge without issue. If shutdown happens on a new pack, charge the battery to 100% on the supplied charger before the first use — Ni-MH cells straight from storage carry a partial charge that may sit close to the cutoff margin.
EL 515 not recognising a new battery after the instrument sat unused for months
Ni-MH packs self-discharge over storage — after several months, cell voltage can drop low enough that the EL 515's charge circuit does not initiate a charge cycle when the pack is inserted. The charger sees a voltage below its recovery threshold and does nothing. Place the battery on the charger for at least 30 minutes regardless of the indicator light — most chargers will trickle-charge a deeply discharged Ni-MH cell back above the recovery threshold (typically around 1.0V per cell) before switching to normal charge rate. Once the indicator confirms charging, let it run to full before installing the pack.

Frequently Asked Questions
The EL 515 powers on but cuts out the moment the laser starts rotating — battery shows charged. What's happening?
The laser motor draws a higher current at start-up than during steady rotation, and that initial spike can pull cell voltage below the protection threshold on a degraded pack. If the pack is new but has been sitting in storage, it may not be at true full charge — Ni-MH cells lose capacity sitting unused. Charge fully before the first rotation test. If cutout still happens after a complete charge cycle, check that the battery contacts in the compartment are clean and making firm contact, as even slight resistance amplifies the voltage drop during motor start.
Readings from the EL 515 are drifting or the laser line is wandering mid-session — could this be the battery?
Yes. A sustained session taxes the Ni-MH pack steadily, and as cell voltage drops under continuous load, the self-levelling system can receive inconsistent power to its pendulum control circuit. The laser line appears to wander or the unit re-levels repeatedly. This is a voltage dropout under sustained sensor load, not a mechanical fault. Check the battery charge level — if it is below roughly 50%, recharge and test again before assuming a calibration or levelling issue.
The EL 515 battery will not charge at all after the instrument was stored over winter — charger light does nothing. How do I recover it?
A Ni-MH pack stored for several months can self-discharge to a voltage level where the charger's initiation circuit does not recognise it as a valid cell. Connect the battery to the charger and leave it for 30–45 minutes without expecting an immediate indicator response — a trickle current is flowing even when the light stays off. Once cell voltage recovers above the charger's wake threshold (typically around 1.0V per cell), the normal charge cycle will begin and the indicator will activate. If there is still no response after 45 minutes, the pack has likely discharged past chemical recovery and needs replacing.
