Getac U2142 Series — 7.4V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery (GNG-E20)
This 7.4V 5200mAh (38.48Wh) Li-Polymer battery replaces the GNG-E20 cell in Getac U2142 rugged laptops. It fits the U2142-i3-3217U, U2142-i5-3317U, U2142-i5-3337U, and additional U2142 variants sharing the same connector and BMS handshake. Capacity figure is sourced from product data, not estimated.
- U2142 platform fit: All U2142 variants listed share the same 7.4V two-cell Li-Polymer configuration, identical connector pinout, and the same BMS authentication protocol — one cell fits the full range without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge, full-load discharge, and hibernate cutoff on a U2142 unit. The BMS accepted the cell without fault codes, charge progression moved through the expected CC/CV stages, and voltage held steady under combined CPU and display load.
- Post-swap BIOS calibration on the U2142: After fitting this cell, run one full discharge to hibernate cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100% without interruption. This forces the BIOS battery learn cycle to reset against the new cell's actual chemistry and clears the inaccurate health warning that appears after every cell swap.
BIOS reporting battery health as poor after fitting the new cell
The U2142 BIOS stores charge history and wear data from the previous cell in its own memory — not on the battery itself. When a new cell is fitted, the BIOS compares current readings against stale data from the old cell and flags the health as poor or degraded. This is not a fault with the replacement. Running one full discharge-to-hibernate cycle followed by an uninterrupted full charge resets the learn cycle. After two to three cycles, the health indicator updates to reflect the new cell accurately.
Laptop shuts down at 20–30% charge shown on screen
This happens when the fuel gauge IC has not yet calibrated against the new cell's actual voltage curve. The gauge misreads remaining capacity and the system hits a low-voltage cutoff before the displayed percentage reaches zero. The fix is to complete at least two full discharge-to-hibernate cycles without manual shutdown at any point. After calibration cycles complete, the OS fuel gauge tracks the new cell accurately down to the correct cutoff voltage of approximately 6.0V under load.

The U2142 BIOS shows "0% available (plugged in, charging)" after I swapped the battery — what's happening?
The BIOS is reading stale EEPROM data from the old cell and cannot yet map it to the new one. It will show 0% or "unknown" until the learn cycle runs. Discharge fully to hibernate cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100% without removing the AC adapter. After one complete cycle the BIOS will register the cell correctly.
Windows is reporting this battery as 28Wh, but the cell is rated 38.48Wh — why is the Wh figure wrong?
The Wh value Windows displays is pulled from the battery's EEPROM, which stores the rated capacity of the original factory cell. Until the fuel gauge IC accumulates enough charge/discharge data to update its learned capacity, it reports the old figure. Run two full discharge-to-hibernate cycles and the reported Wh will converge toward the actual 38.48Wh of the new cell.
The U2142 stops charging at 80% and won't go higher — is the new battery faulty?
Not a battery fault. The U2142 BIOS includes a firmware-controlled charge limit that activates when the system detects extended AC-connected use, capping charge at 80% to reduce cell wear over time. Check the Getac Control Center or BIOS power settings for a "Battery Care Mode" or charge threshold option and disable it. Once that setting is off, the cell will charge to the full 38.48Wh capacity.
