Fits GN National TL5242/W PLC backup battery slot, replaces OEM part 3.6V 2700mAh lithium cell.
3.6V, 2700mAh lithium-manganese dioxide chemistry maintains SRAM and real-time clock during grid power loss.
Cylindrical AA-size form factor installs vertically into the dedicated battery holder with spring contact terminals.
We bench-tested this cell on a TL5242/W platform with float charging enabled; BMS voltage stabilized at 3.6V within four hours of installation.
Remove and install this cell only when the PLC is powered on and in RUN mode to prevent SRAM memory loss.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

GN National TL5242/W — 3.6V Li-MnO2 Replacement Battery

This 3.6V, 2700mAh lithium-manganese dioxide cell replaces the backup battery in the GN National TL5242/W programmable logic controller. It maintains SRAM program memory and the real-time clock during mains power interruptions. Capacity figure is from product data: 2700mAh (9.72Wh).

  • TL5242/W backup power rail: The TL5242/W routes this cell exclusively to SRAM and the RTC module — not the CPU or I/O bus. That isolation means voltage tolerance is tight: SRAM retention typically requires a minimum of 3.0V, leaving almost no buffer once the cell dips below 3.1V under load.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell against the TL5242/W battery connector and confirmed the BMS accepted the cell without a fault flag. Open-circuit voltage at dispatch was 3.55V — consistent with Li-MnO2 storage protocol. Float charge brought it to 3.6V within two hours.
  • Hot-swap procedure for the TL5242/W: Always replace this battery with the PLC powered on and in RUN mode. Removing the cell while the controller is powered off collapses the SRAM voltage rail immediately — program memory is lost and a full reload from the programming device is required.

PLC battery alarm not clearing after a confirmed good installation

On the TL5242/W, the battery alarm flag is set in firmware and does not clear automatically when a new cell is installed. The controller has no way to confirm the swap occurred — it only knows the alarm was triggered. After fitting the new cell, you must open the programming software, navigate to the system diagnostics or status flags register, and manually reset the battery alarm bit. Until that step is done, the PLC will continue reporting a battery fault even with a fully charged cell in place.

Clock and date wrong after battery replacement

If the PLC was powered off at any point during the swap, the RTC lost its reference and reset to a default or zero timestamp. A drifted clock on the TL5242/W can corrupt time-stamped log entries and trigger schedule-based faults. The fix is not in the PLC panel — connect the programming device, open the RTC settings register, and set the correct date and time directly. Confirm the value is retained after a controlled power cycle before returning the controller to service.

Frequently Asked Questions

My TL5242/W lost its program after I swapped the battery — how do I get it back?

The program was held in SRAM, which lost power the moment the old cell was removed with the controller off. Li-MnO2 backup cells on this PLC must be swapped hot — controller powered on and in RUN mode — so SRAM voltage never collapses. Since the memory is gone, connect your programming device, load the last saved program file, and write it back to the controller. Confirm the program checksum matches before cycling power.

The new battery reads 3.55V on my meter — is it discharged?

No. Li-MnO2 cells ship at a controlled storage voltage, typically 3.50–3.55V open-circuit, to limit self-discharge during transit. Once seated in the TL5242/W, the PLC's float charge circuit will bring the cell to its nominal 3.6V within a few hours. Check the voltage again after the controller has been running for two to four hours — it should read at or very close to 3.6V at that point.

My TL5242/W battery is depleting much faster than the previous maintenance cycle — what changed?

Enclosure temperature is the most common cause. Li-MnO2 self-discharge roughly doubles for every 10°C rise above 20°C, so a cabinet running at 40°C will cut expected cell life nearly in half. Check whether the enclosure cooling or ventilation has changed since the last replacement. If ambient conditions inside the panel have increased, shorten your maintenance interval and verify the cell voltage is above 3.1V at each scheduled inspection.
