Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.
Delivery and Shipping
Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

GoPro Hero 8 Black / Hero 7 Black / Hero 5 Black — 3.85V Li-ion Replacement Battery (SPJB1B)
This 3.85V, 1220mAh (4.7Wh) Li-ion cell replaces the GoPro SPJB1B battery across the Hero 5, 6, 7, and 8 Black action camera lineup. It fits the same physical bay and uses the same three-contact interface as the OEM cell. Swap it in when your original cell no longer holds a charge through a full shooting session.
- Hero 5–8 Black shared battery platform: GoPro standardised the SPJB1B footprint across four Hero Black generations — same 35.74 × 31.33 × 11.00mm dimensions, same contact layout, same BMS communication protocol. One cell fits all four bodies without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell in a Hero 8 Black body and confirmed the BMS handshake completed on first insertion, the battery-remaining indicator populated correctly, and the protection circuit tripped cleanly at the low-voltage cutoff threshold during a full drain cycle.
- First-use charge cycle on Hero 8 Black: Charge this cell once through the camera body or OEM charger before heavy shooting. The Hero 8 Black's BMS maps percentage readout against the cell's discharge curve during that first charge — skipping it can cause the indicator to read erratically in early cycles.
Battery percentage jumping erratically on the Hero 8 Black display
The Hero 8 Black uses voltage-threshold mapping to estimate remaining charge. A new cell has a slightly different discharge curve than a worn OEM cell, so the camera's fuel gauge can misread it for the first few cycles. The indicator may jump from 80% to 50% without warning, then stabilise. Run two or three full charge-and-drain cycles and the readout settles — the BMS recalibrates its thresholds against the actual curve of the new cell.
Hero 8 Black showing dead-battery icon on a replacement cell that still has charge
This happens when the camera body cuts power at a voltage it reads as depleted, but the replacement cell's resting voltage sits slightly above the OEM cutoff point. The BMS is not rejecting the cell — it is misreading the state-of-charge on first use. Place the battery in the OEM charger or a compatible external charger and bring it to a full 4.2V before inserting it into the camera. That single full-charge pass clears the false-dead reading in most cases.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Hero 8 Black says "No Battery" the first time I put in the replacement — is the cell dead?
It is not dead. The Hero 8 Black performs a BMS authentication check on every new cell inserted cold. If the cell voltage dropped below the camera's minimum recognition threshold during storage, the body rejects it before the handshake completes. Place the battery in an external charger or the OEM USB-C cable via the camera body for 10–15 minutes to raise the cell above the 3.6V recognition floor, then reinsert it — the camera will detect it on the next attempt.
Shot count is lower than I expected — the battery drains faster than the original did when it was new.
The Hero 8 Black pulls current from several systems simultaneously: sensor readout, image stabilisation, GPS, and continuous autofocus all add draw on top of the codec workload. Rated capacity reflects a controlled discharge, not real-world camera load. Turning off GPS and reducing stabilisation to "Boost" only when needed brings draw closer to spec. If the cell still drains unusually fast after two full charge cycles, check that the body firmware is current — older firmware versions have a known standby-drain bug that pulls from the battery even between clips.
The Hero 8 Black body gets warm during long video clips — is the battery causing it?
The heat source is the camera body, not the cell. Under sustained 4K recording, the Hero 8 Black's processor, sensor, and stabilisation motor all generate heat simultaneously, and the compact body has no active cooling. That combined draw does raise the cell's operating temperature, which is within normal Li-ion range for this form factor. If the body shuts down mid-clip rather than just running warm, check that the battery contacts are clean and making full contact — a resistive connection at the three-pin interface creates heat at the joint and can trigger a thermal protection cutoff.
