Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

GreenWorks 40V Li-ion 5.0Ah Replacement Battery (24252 / 29302 / 29462)
This is a 40V, 5000mAh lithium-ion battery for GreenWorks G-MAX 40V cordless outdoor power tools. It fits the 20292 lawn mower and compatible models in the 40V G-MAX platform, including chainsaws, hedge trimmers, and string trimmers. Replaces OEM part numbers 24252, 29302, 29462, 29472, and 2601102.
- G-MAX 40V platform fit: Models 20292, 20302, 20672, and 21332 share the same 40V battery rail, connector housing, and BMS handshake protocol. One pack works across all of them without adapters or firmware changes.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack on a 20292 mower and a G-MAX chainsaw. The BMS handled motor-start inrush current without nuisance tripping and held the 40V rail stable through sustained load cycles.
- First-use motor load conditioning: On the first two uses, run the tool at half throttle or partial load before going full bore. This lets the BMS register the motor's inrush current signature and calibrate overcurrent thresholds before you hit maximum torque applications.
BMS cutoff on G-MAX motor-start inrush surge
When a GreenWorks 40V mower or chainsaw pulls trigger from a dead stop, the motor draws a short current spike — sometimes 3–5× the running current. If the BMS overcurrent threshold is set tight or the pack is cold, it reads that spike as a fault and cuts output immediately. This is not a defective battery. Warming the pack to above 10°C before use and easing into full load on the first pull usually prevents the trip. A pack that trips repeatedly under normal conditions at room temperature should be inspected for high internal resistance — check cell voltage at rest; a healthy cell sits above 3.6V per cell.
Charger shows blinking red and won't accept the pack after storage
GreenWorks 40V chargers have a minimum cell voltage threshold — typically around 2.5V per cell — below which the charger refuses to begin a charge cycle and blinks red. A pack stored discharged for several months can drop below this threshold through self-discharge. To recover it, some GreenWorks chargers support a trickle or "wake-up" mode: remove and re-seat the pack firmly three times, then leave it seated for 10–15 minutes. If the charger still won't initiate, measure pack voltage directly — if it reads below 28V across the terminals, the cells may have dropped too far for recovery and the pack should be replaced.

Frequently Asked Questions
My GreenWorks 20292 mower cuts out the instant I pull the trigger — is this a faulty battery?
That's a BMS overcurrent trip, not a defective pack. The motor-start inrush current spike on the 20292 can briefly exceed the BMS protection threshold, especially in cold weather or on the first pull of the day. Warm the battery above 10°C and ease into full blade engagement rather than going straight to maximum throttle. If it still cuts out at room temperature, check resting pack voltage — each cell should sit above 3.6V.
The mower feels underpowered and bogs down through thick grass even with a charged battery — what's wrong?
That's voltage sag under load, not a capacity issue. High contact resistance at the battery terminals or worn tool contacts can cause the 40V rail to drop under heavy draw, starving the motor mid-cut. Clean the battery terminals and the mower's battery bay contacts with a dry cloth, then check for corrosion or debris. If sag continues, measure terminal voltage while the blade is spinning under load — it should stay above 36V; anything lower points to contact resistance or cell degradation.
This new battery sits unused all winter — how should I store it so it still works in spring?
Li-ion cells self-discharge during long storage, and the GreenWorks 40V BMS can lock the pack out if cells fall below the charger acceptance voltage over winter. Store the pack at roughly 50–60% charge — not fully charged and not empty. Check voltage before storing; the pack should read between 36V and 40V at the terminals. Before the first spring use, put it on the charger for a full cycle and confirm the charger light goes green before loading the mower.
