Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Homelite Cordless Shrub Shear — 7.2V Ni-MH Replacement Battery

This 7.2V, 1800mAh Ni-MH pack replaces the SC1800x6 battery in the Homelite UT44171 and UT44176 cordless shrub shears. These are motorized blade trimmers for cutting small hedges and garden shrubs. Capacity matches OEM spec at 12.96Wh.

  • UT44171 and UT44176 compatibility: Both models run the same 7.2V rail with the same connector and BMS interface, so one battery platform covers either shear without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran full charge/discharge cycles — the BMS held voltage steady under motor load and cut off cleanly at the low-voltage threshold without triggering a false fault state.
  • First-cycle conditioning for Ni-MH: Run the shear until the blades slow noticeably, then charge fully — repeat this two or three times to bring the cells to rated capacity before normal use.

Why cell format matters in a compact shrub shear

The SC1800x6 platform stacks six sub-C Ni-MH cells in series to reach 7.2V. The 86.50 x 67.10 x 22.70mm envelope keeps the pack within the tool's slim handle geometry. Swapping to a higher-capacity cell in the same footprint isn't possible without changing the housing, so 1800mAh is the practical ceiling for this form factor.

Blades slow under load but the charge indicator still shows full

Ni-MH cells develop memory effect after repeated shallow discharge cycles — the pack voltage reads acceptable at rest but collapses when the blade motor draws current. The fix is a deliberate deep discharge followed by a full charge, repeated two to three times. If the problem persists, the cells have reached end of life and the pack needs replacement, not conditioning.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Homelite shrubber cuts fine for a few seconds then the blades slow down and almost stop — is that the battery dying?

That blade-bog pattern on a 7.2V Ni-MH tool usually means voltage sag under load, not total capacity loss — the pack can't sustain current draw once the blades hit resistance from thicker stems. Check resting voltage with a multimeter after a full charge: a healthy pack should read at or above 8.5V at rest, and if it drops below 7V the moment blades engage, the cells are worn. Let the battery cool completely between charges — Ni-MH packs in light garden tools are often charged warm, which accelerates this exact degradation. Try the voltage-under-load test first before assuming the new battery is at fault.

I charged this Homelite shrubber overnight and the blades are still weak right out of the charger — why?

Ni-MH batteries shipped or stored for months arrive partially discharged, and a single overnight charge on a low-rate charger may not fully recover them — this is especially common with 7.2V packs in small garden tools that sit in warehouses between seasons. Run two or three full discharge-and-recharge cycles before judging performance: use the trimmer until the blades noticeably slow, then charge completely. We've seen freshly installed Ni-MH cells in this voltage class perform 20–30% below their rated capacity until cycled. After the third cycle, if blade strength hasn't improved, measure pack voltage immediately after charging — it should be above 8.4V.

The Homelite UT44171 worked great last fall and now it won't hold a charge after sitting in the garage all winter — did it just self-discharge completely?

Ni-MH cells self-discharge faster than almost any other chemistry — a 7.2V pack left uncharged through a cold winter can drop low enough that a standard charger won't recognize it as a valid battery and will refuse to charge it at all. This is called a deeply discharged state, and it's the most common reason a stored shrubber appears completely dead in spring. Try applying a slow trickle charge for two to four hours using a compatible charger that has a recovery or conditioning mode, which can bring the pack voltage up enough for the charger to resume normal charging. If the pack voltage reads below 5V after that trickle period, the cells haven't recovered and a replacement pack is the correct next step.
