Fits HUNTEC HT-3688 and HT-558 two-way radios; replaces OEM battery part number LB-38L.
7.4V 1200mAh lithium-ion cell delivers sustained RF output on handheld radio platforms without mid-transmission sag.
Gold contact strip and vertical slot connector match OEM dock orientation; locking tab engages on downward insertion.
Bench testing showed normal BMS ramp on first charge with clean contact cycle; voltage acceptance matched factory specifications.
If the charger dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly — the HT-3688 platform requires a clean contact cycle to accept the new BMS handshake before charging begins.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

HUNTEC HT-3688 / HT-558 — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (LB-38L)

This is a 7.4V 1200mAh Li-ion replacement battery for the HUNTEC HT-3688 and HT-558 portable two-way radios. It uses OEM part number LB-38L and drops into the same battery bay without modification. Capacity is 1200mAh (8.88Wh), matching the original specification.

  • HT-3688 and HT-558 platform: Both radios run the same 7.4V voltage rail and share an identical battery bay geometry, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol — which is why they take the same LB-38L pack. Swapping between models is not supported; confirm your model before ordering.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack on the HT-3688 bench rig and monitored the BMS during PTT transmit spikes. The protection circuit held steady through repeated high-draw bursts without tripping into overcurrent lockout.
  • First insertion on the charger dock: If the dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The HT-3688 charger requires a clean contact cycle to complete the BMS handshake before it will begin charging.

Why the HT-3688 cuts out mid-transmission on a freshly inserted battery

When a new Li-ion pack ships, it sits at storage voltage — typically around 3.7V per cell, putting the pack near 7.4V at rest. The moment you key up, the transmit current spike can pull cell voltage below the BMS undervoltage threshold momentarily, tripping a brief cutout. This is not a faulty battery. Charge the pack fully to 8.4V before first operational use and the BMS will hold stable through normal PTT cycles.

Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after a full charge

The HT-3688 reads battery level using simple voltage-threshold steps — not a fuel gauge chip. A new cell's resting voltage can settle slightly below the threshold for the top bar within minutes of coming off charge, making the indicator drop one bar even though capacity is full. This is a voltage-settling effect, not a capacity issue. Key the radio up briefly to draw a light load, then re-check — the indicator will stabilise at the correct bar level once the surface charge dissipates.

Frequently Asked Questions

My HT-3688 drops to low transmit power partway through a shift — is this the new battery?

This is voltage sag under sustained RF output. During long transmit bursts, cell voltage dips under load; if it crosses the radio's reduced-power threshold, the HT-3688 steps down TX output to protect the circuit. It is not a faulty pack — it is normal Li-ion behaviour under high draw. Charge the battery fully to 8.4V before your shift and keep transmissions short where possible to reduce sustained current draw.

The charger dock blinks a fault LED and never clears, even after I've left the pack in for an hour — what's happening?

Most charger docks for the HT-3688 have a minimum acceptance voltage below which they will not begin a charge cycle. If the pack has been in extended storage and cells have self-discharged below approximately 6.0V, the dock reads it as a fault condition and refuses to charge. Remove the pack, wipe the gold contacts on both the battery and dock with a dry cloth, reseat firmly, and wait 60 seconds — a clean contact cycle is sometimes enough to trigger acceptance. If the fault LED still does not clear, the cells are likely below the recovery threshold and the pack should be replaced.

The radio powers on fine but the battery drains noticeably faster than the original after a few weeks — why?

Shallow cycling degrades Li-ion cells faster than full cycles on low-draw devices like two-way radios. If the radio sits on standby most of the shift and is only topped up briefly, the cells never complete a proper charge-discharge cycle and capacity fade accelerates. Run the pack down to one bar before recharging — this lets the cells complete a full cycle and keeps the voltage-threshold bar indicator calibrated to actual remaining capacity.
