Fits Icom IC-F70, IC-F80, IC-F70D, IC-F70DS and replaces BP236, BP235, BP254 battery packs.
7.4V lithium-ion at 3240mAh powers sustained RF output without voltage sag during extended transmit cycles.
Gold contact strip aligns vertically into the radio's spring-loaded dock with a quarter-turn locking tab.
We ran load testing under continuous PTT and confirmed the BMS accepted charger dock handshake on first insertion.
If the charger dock shows a fault LED after inserting this cell, remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly — the Icom platform requires a clean contact cycle to accept the new BMS before charging begins.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Icom IC-F70 / IC-F80 Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BP-236)

This 7.4V, 3240mAh lithium-ion battery replaces the Icom BP-236, BP-235, and BP-254 packs. It fits the IC-F70, IC-F80, IC-F70D, IC-F70DS, and related models in the same platform family. Voltage and connector match the OEM spec directly.

  • IC-F70 / IC-F80 platform fit: These models share the same 7.4V rail, battery bay dimensions, and BMS handshake protocol across the range. One pack covers the full group because Icom standardised the connector and contact layout across the F70 and F80 chassis.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack in an IC-F70 charger dock and monitored BMS communication through the full charge cycle. The protection circuit responded correctly to charge termination and held voltage within spec at rest.
  • First insertion on Icom dock contacts: If the dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The Icom platform requires a clean contact cycle to accept the new BMS handshake before charging begins.

IC-F70 cuts out mid-transmission on a new BP-236

A new lithium-ion cell ships at storage voltage — typically around 3.7V per cell, not full charge. When PTT is pressed, transmit current spikes sharply. If the pack hasn't completed its first full charge cycle, that spike can pull cell voltage below the BMS overcurrent threshold and trigger a protective cutout. This is not a faulty battery. Charge the pack fully in the dock before the first use shift — the dock indicator should go green before you key up.

Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after fitting a new pack

The IC-F70 uses a voltage-threshold bar indicator, not a fuel gauge chip. At storage voltage the pack reads lower than a fully charged cell, so the radio displays one or two bars even on a brand-new battery. This is a voltage reading, not a capacity fault. Put the pack through one complete charge in the dock and the indicator will show the correct bar level — typically confirmed above 8.0V resting.

Frequently Asked Questions

My IC-F70 cuts out every time I press PTT — is this the battery or the radio?

This is almost always the battery. Pressing PTT draws a sharp current spike for RF transmission, and if the pack is below full charge, that spike pulls cell voltage low enough to trip the BMS overcurrent cutout. The radio goes silent because the protection circuit kills the output — not because the radio has a fault. Charge the pack fully in the dock until the indicator goes green, then test again.

The charger dock fault LED on my IC-F80 never clears after I insert the new BP-236 — what's happening?

The dock is refusing to start the charge cycle because it can't establish a clean BMS handshake through the contact strip. Remove the battery, wipe the gold contacts on both the pack and the dock with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly with even pressure. If the fault LED still shows, the pack's resting voltage may have dropped below the dock's acceptance threshold during storage — leave it seated for 10–15 minutes and the dock should re-attempt and clear.

Radio drops to noticeably weaker TX output halfway through a shift even though the bar indicator still shows charge — why?

This is voltage sag under sustained RF load. As the cell depletes, internal resistance rises and voltage drops during each transmission burst. The bar indicator reads resting voltage between transmissions, so it lags behind actual load performance — the bars look fine but the cell can't hold voltage under the current draw of continuous keying. This is normal Li-ion behaviour at lower state of charge, not a defective pack. Keep a second charged pack available for long shifts with heavy radio traffic.
