Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Kenwood TH-K2AT / TH-K4AT Series — 7.2V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (PB-43N)
This is a 7.2V, 1800mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Kenwood TH-K2AT, TH-K4AT, TH-K2E, and TH-K2ET portable transceivers. It replaces OEM part numbers PB-43N, PB-43H, KNB-43, and PB-43. The battery slots into the same bay as the original pack with no modifications required.
- TH-K2 and TH-K4 platform fit: These models share the same battery bay dimensions, contact layout, and 7.2V rail. The BMS handshake protocol is consistent across the series, so the same pack services all four listed variants without adaptation.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack in a TH-K2AT dock and monitored BMS behaviour through full charge and a sustained PTT load test. The BMS held the voltage rail steady under transmit current draw and triggered no spurious cutoffs.
- First-insertion contact cycle on the Kenwood dock: If the charger dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The Kenwood dock requires a clean contact cycle to accept the new BMS handshake before charging begins.
Why the TH-K2AT cuts out mid-transmission on a new battery
A new Ni-MH cell ships at storage voltage — typically around 6.8V to 7.0V, below the pack's nominal 7.2V. When PTT is pressed, transmit current spikes sharply, and a cell at storage voltage can dip far enough to trigger the BMS overcurrent protection. The radio goes silent not because the pack is faulty, but because the BMS is doing its job on an undercharged cell. Put the pack through one full charge cycle on the Kenwood dock before the first use, and the cutout behaviour stops.
Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after fitting this pack
The TH-K2AT uses a voltage-threshold bar indicator — each bar maps to a specific voltage band. A new Ni-MH pack at storage voltage sits in the lower threshold band, so the display reads one bar short even though the cell is not depleted. This is not a capacity defect. After a full charge cycle the resting voltage rises above the next threshold, and the indicator moves to the correct bar. Charge fully on the Kenwood dock and recheck the display before drawing any conclusions about the pack.

Frequently Asked Questions
My TH-K2AT goes silent when I press PTT on a brand-new battery — is the pack dead?
No. New Ni-MH cells ship at storage voltage, typically 6.8–7.0V on a 7.2V pack. When you key up, the transmit current spike drops the cell voltage below the BMS overcurrent threshold, and the radio cuts out to protect the circuit. Run one full charge cycle on the Kenwood dock first — that brings the cell to nominal voltage and the cutout stops.
The charger dock fault LED never clears after I insert this pack — what's wrong?
The Kenwood dock checks the pack voltage before accepting a charge cycle. A new cell at storage voltage can fall below the dock's acceptance threshold, so the dock refuses the handshake and holds the fault LED. Remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, reseat firmly, and try again. If the LED still holds, the cell voltage may be too low for the dock to recover — use a compatible external charger set to 7.2V Ni-MH to bring the pack above the dock acceptance voltage, then return it to the Kenwood dock.
After a few months in a drawer, the TH-K2AT shows flat even though the battery was fully charged when stored — can the pack recover?
Ni-MH cells self-discharge at roughly 1–2% per day, so a pack stored for several months can drop to a level where the Kenwood dock refuses to charge it. Place the pack in the dock — if the fault LED holds and never transitions, the cell is below the dock's recovery threshold. Use an external Ni-MH charger with a recovery or trickle mode to bring the pack up to approximately 7.0V, then transfer it back to the Kenwood dock for a full charge.
