After that first cycle, the percentage will track normally.

The MOBY8500 was sitting unused in a drawer for a few months and now won't power on at all — did the battery die?

Li-Polymer cells self-discharge at roughly 2–3% per month, so a terminal stored for several months can arrive with a cell below the BMS recovery threshold — typically under 3.0V — at which point the BMS locks out to prevent unsafe charging. Connect the terminal to its OEM charger and leave it for 30–45 minutes without pressing the power button; many chargers apply a low-current recovery charge below 3.0V before switching to normal charge rate. If the charge LED comes on within that window, the cell is recovering. If nothing happens after an hour, the original cell is likely fully dead and this replacement battery will resolve it.

The MOBY8500 gets noticeably warm during a busy service period — is that a battery problem or a terminal problem?

During high-transaction periods the MOBY8500 runs its display, contactless radio, and receipt printer simultaneously, and that combined draw generates heat across the entire board — not just the battery. A warm case during heavy use is normal. If the terminal gets hot enough to trigger a thermal warning on screen, or if it shuts down mid-session, check that the terminal is not stored in a case or pocket between transactions, as trapped heat accelerates cell temperature. Let the terminal sit open on a counter between sales; if shutdowns continue, check that the battery contacts are clean and making full contact with the cell's terminals.
