Fits JVC GR-DVL40, GR-DVL33, GR-DVL25, and replaces OEM part BN-V214UB, BN-V207U, BN-V214U, BN-V207, BN-V214.
7.4V lithium-ion cell delivers 2200mAh — rated output for sustained video recording and flash recycling on compact camcorders.
Connector slides into battery compartment with mechanical locking tab; orientation marked on housing matches GR-DVL40 contact plate.
Bench testing showed clean BMS handshake on first insertion; discharge curve stable across full capacity range without early cutoff.
On first use, insert this cell and run one complete charge cycle in the camera body — the GR-DVL40 BMS needs this cycle to map battery-remaining display accurately to the new cell's voltage curve.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

JVC GR-DVL40 / GR-DVL33 Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BN-V214UB)

This is a 7.4V, 2200mAh (16.28Wh) lithium-ion battery that replaces the OEM BN-V214UB and BN-V214U cells. It fits the JVC GR-DVL40, GR-DVL33, GR-DVL25, GR-DVF31, and over a dozen additional GR-series compact camcorders. The contact layout and BMS communication protocol match the original JVC battery bay on these models.

  • GR-DVL and GR-DVF series compatibility: These models share the same 7.4V two-cell Li-ion architecture and identical battery bay connector. The BMS handshake uses the same data line, so a single cell works across the full platform without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on a GR-DVL40 body. The BMS accepted the cell on the first charge cycle and reported remaining capacity without flagging an incompatible or unknown battery alert.
  • Camcorder BMS initialisation tip: On first install, run one full charge through the camcorder body or OEM JVC charger before recording. Some GR-series bodies require this cycle to calibrate the battery-remaining display accurately against a new cell's discharge curve.

Battery percentage indicator jumping on the GR-DVL40 after fitting a new cell

JVC's battery gauge maps voltage thresholds to percentage steps that were tuned to the original BN-V214UB discharge curve. A new lithium cell has a slightly flatter mid-range discharge profile, so the body may show an abrupt drop from three bars to one without a gradual transition. This is not a cell fault — it is the body misreading the voltage at a threshold point. Running two full charge-discharge cycles through the OEM charger resets the calibration reference and stabilises the display.

GR-DVL40 showing a dead battery icon on a cell that still has charge

If the camcorder shuts down and displays the low-battery warning but the cell reads above 7.0V on a multimeter, the body's cutoff threshold is triggering on a voltage sag rather than actual depletion. This happens when the cell has not completed a full initialisation cycle and the BMS is reading resting voltage instead of load voltage correctly. Place the battery in the OEM charger until the charge indicator shows full, then reinsert. If the body then powers on normally, the issue was calibration, not cell capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

My GR-DVL40 shows "no battery" or won't recognise the replacement cell — what's happening?

The GR-series BMS runs an authentication check on insertion and can reject a new cell if it hasn't completed a charge handshake yet. Remove the battery, place it in the OEM JVC charger or charge it inside the camcorder body until the indicator shows full, then reinsert. We saw this on the bench — the body accepted the cell immediately after the first full charge cycle. If the alert clears after charging, no further action is needed.

The shot count on this replacement seems lower than I expected — is something wrong with the cell?

The GR-DVL40 draws from the battery across multiple simultaneous loads — the CCD sensor, the LCD panel, the tape transport motor, and the optical image stabiliser all run in parallel during recording. Manufacturer shot counts are typically measured under controlled conditions that don't reflect continuous recording with the LCD open and OIS active. Check that the LCD backlight is not set to maximum and that OIS is only enabled when needed — those two adjustments alone reduce draw noticeably.

The battery percentage on my GR-DVL33 drops suddenly from half to nearly empty — is the cell defective?

This is a voltage threshold mapping issue, not a defective cell. JVC's indicator steps are calibrated to the original BN-V214 discharge curve, and a new cell's mid-range voltage sits slightly above the body's expected reference point before dropping through a threshold quickly. Run two full charge and discharge cycles through the camcorder body. After the second cycle, the display stabilises because the body has seen the new cell's actual voltage behaviour across its full range.
