7.2V, 2100mAh Ni-MH pack delivers full transmit power on sustained RF output without voltage sag mid-shift.
Gold contact strip slides into the radio dock with a firm click and locks with the spring tab fully seated.
We bench tested this cell on a TK-3140 dock charger; BMS accepted the pack on first insertion with no fault cycling.
On first insertion into the charger dock, if the light blinks or does not turn green, remove the battery and wipe the gold contacts with a dry cloth, then reseat firmly.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Kenwood TK-3140 / TK-2140 Series — 7.2V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (KNB-24L)

This is a 7.2V, 2100mAh Ni-MH battery for the Kenwood TK-3140, TK-2140, TK-2160, TK-2170, and compatible models. It replaces OEM part numbers KNB-24L, KNB-25A, KNB-26, KNB-26N, KNB-56N, KNB-55L, KNB-35L, and KNB-57L. The pack slots directly into the standard battery bay on these Kenwood handheld transceivers.

  • TK-2140 / TK-2160 / TK-2170 / TK-3140 compatibility: These models share the same 7.2V voltage rail, contact layout, and BMS handshake protocol — which is why one battery family covers the full lineup. The connector footprint and latch geometry are identical across this generation of Kenwood portables.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through charge and transmit cycles on a TK-3140 dock. The BMS negotiated cleanly on first insertion, held voltage through repeated PTT bursts, and the charger advanced to trickle without a fault LED.
  • First insertion on a Kenwood dock: If the dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. Kenwood chargers require a clean contact cycle to complete the BMS handshake before charging begins — this is not a defective battery.

Why the TK-3140 cuts out mid-transmission on a new Ni-MH pack

Ni-MH cells ship at a reduced storage voltage — typically 30–50% of full charge. When the radio keys up and demands transmit current, the pack voltage sags below the BMS cutoff threshold before the cells have completed a full conditioning cycle. The radio interprets this as a low-battery event and drops TX. One or two full charge-discharge cycles through the Kenwood dock brings the cells to rated capacity and eliminates the sag. After conditioning, the pack sustains the transmit current draw without tripping the cutoff.

Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected on a fresh KNB-24L

Kenwood handhelds use a voltage-threshold bar indicator — each bar corresponds to a specific resting voltage band. A new Ni-MH pack at storage voltage reads lower than a fully charged one, so the radio displays one or two fewer bars even though the pack is not faulty. Charge the battery fully in the Kenwood dock until the charge LED goes green. After a complete charge cycle the resting voltage will sit above 8.4V and the indicator will reflect the correct state.

Frequently Asked Questions

My TK-3140 drops to low-power TX halfway through a shift — is this the battery?

Most likely yes. Under sustained RF output, a Ni-MH pack with degraded cells can't hold voltage through the full transmit demand, so the radio's BMS steps down TX power to protect the circuit. This is voltage sag under load, not a radio fault. Charge the new pack through two full cycles on the Kenwood dock before field use — resting voltage after a full charge should read at or above 8.4V.

The charger dock blinks a fault LED and never clears after I insert the new KNB-24L — what's wrong?

Kenwood docks reject packs that arrive below the dock's acceptance voltage threshold — this is a shipping storage state, not a defective battery. Remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat it firmly to complete the BMS handshake. If the fault LED persists, try a 30-second removal and reinsertion — the dock resets its detection cycle on each insertion event.

The new pack won't recover after sitting unused in the radio for several weeks — BMS lockout?

Ni-MH cells left in a discharged state self-discharge past the BMS recovery threshold, and the dock may refuse to charge a pack it reads as too low. Remove the battery from the radio when it won't be used for more than a few days — this prevents the pack from draining below 6.0V, which is the point at which the Kenwood charger's acceptance circuit rejects the pack entirely.
