This happens when the fuel gauge IC's stored discharge curve no longer matches the actual cell voltage behaviour under load. Under combined CPU and display draw, the cell voltage drops faster than the outdated curve predicts, hitting the EC's low-voltage cutoff before the gauge reaches 0%. The fuel gauge IC needs calibration cycles against the new cell to map the correct voltage cliff.
