ThinkPad firmware stores battery learn data tied to the previous cell's EEPROM profile. Running one complete discharge-to-hibernate followed by a full uninterrupted charge gives the BIOS enough data to rewrite the learn cycle. After two to three cycles, the health indicator normalises.

This happens when the fuel gauge IC has not yet calibrated against the new cell's actual voltage curve. The OS reads an outdated discharge profile and misjudges remaining capacity — the cell hits its real voltage floor before the gauge catches up. Under combined CPU and display load, the voltage drop is steep enough to trigger an immediate shutdown. The fix is two to three full discharge-and-charge cycles; after that, the gauge IC maps the correct floor voltage and the shutdowns stop.

It is not dead. The BIOS fuel gauge IC is reading EEPROM data written by the previous cell and has not yet mapped the new cell's voltage range. Fit the battery, plug in the charger, and let it charge uninterrupted to 100% before unplugging. After one full discharge-to-hibernate and one full charge, the gauge registers correctly.

Windows shows this battery's capacity as lower than the 47.52Wh on the listing — why does the Wh figure not match?

The Wh figure Windows reports is pulled from the cell's EEPROM at the time of manufacture, which can differ slightly from the actual chemistry rating of a replacement cell. This is a data field difference, not a capacity fault. The cell still delivers its rated 4400mAh at 10.8V. After two calibration cycles, the reported figure and actual usable capacity converge.

The E450 charges to 80% and stops — how do I get it to charge to 100%?

ThinkPad BIOS includes a battery charge threshold setting that caps charging at 80% by default on some firmware configurations. This is a BIOS control, not a battery fault. Open Lenovo Vantage (or ThinkPad Power Manager on older installs), go to Battery Settings, and set the charge stop threshold to 100%.
