BIOS reporting poor battery health immediately after replacement

ThinkPad Edge firmware reads EEPROM data written by the previous cell and compares it against the new cell's charge behaviour. Until the learn cycle completes, the BIOS flags the battery as degraded — even when the cell is brand new. This is not a fault with the replacement cell. Run one full discharge to the hibernate threshold and one uninterrupted charge to 100% to write fresh EEPROM reference data and clear the warning.

Laptop shuts down unexpectedly at 20–30% charge shown

The fuel gauge IC on the ThinkPad Edge estimates remaining capacity against a stored charge curve. When a new cell is installed, that stored curve belongs to the worn original battery. Under full CPU and display load, the new cell hits a voltage point the IC misreads as empty — triggering shutdown while the gauge still shows charge remaining. Two or three complete calibration cycles sync the IC's curve to the new cell's actual chemistry. After calibration, the cutoff will track accurately down to the cell's real low-voltage floor near 11.1V.

My ThinkPad Edge E220s shows "0% available (plugged in, charging)" right after I put the new battery in — is the cell dead?

The fuel gauge IC is reading EEPROM data from the old cell and hasn't yet mapped the new cell's charge curve. The cell is not dead. Run one full discharge to hibernate cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100% without using the laptop. After one complete cycle the gauge IC recalibrates and the percentage display returns to normal.

Windows and Lenovo Vantage are showing the wrong Wh rating for this battery — it says something different from the 42.92Wh spec.

The Wh figure shown in software is pulled from the EEPROM on the previous cell, not recalculated from the new cell's chemistry until a learn cycle runs. This is a firmware read issue, not a sign the cell is faulty. Complete one full discharge-to-hibernate and uninterrupted charge-to-100% cycle. After that, the system re-reads the cell's rated data and the Wh figure updates correctly.

The charge on my E420S stops at 80% and won't go higher — new battery just installed.

ThinkPad BIOS includes a charge threshold feature — often enabled by default or left active from the previous user's Lenovo Vantage settings. This is a firmware-controlled limit, not a fault in the replacement cell. Open Lenovo Vantage, go to Power, then Battery, and check whether "Conservation Mode" or a custom charge threshold is turned on. Disable it and the cell will charge to 100%.
