This is a 11.38V, 4400mAh (50.07Wh) lithium-polymer battery for the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 tablet, covering model numbers 1982 and 1983. It replaces OEM part numbers 96BTA016H, 96BTA015H, and DYNC01. If your Surface Pro 8 no longer holds a charge or won't run unplugged, this is the direct cell replacement.

  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on a Surface Pro 8 unit. The BMS handshake completed correctly, charge IC accepted the cell without fault flags, and voltage held steady under display and WiFi combined load.
  • Fuel gauge recalibration after install: After fitting this battery, run one full discharge to automatic shutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. The Surface fuel gauge IC is calibrated against the old cell — this single cycle resets it against the new capacity and clears the inaccurate percentage readout that appears after a swap.

Surface Pro 8 shutting down at 15–25% remaining after battery replacement

This happens because the fuel gauge IC still holds calibration data from the original cell. When voltage drops under combined display and WiFi load, the IC reads a steeper voltage cliff than the new cell actually has, and Windows triggers shutdown early. The fix is one complete discharge-to-shutoff cycle followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100%. After that cycle, the IC maps the new cell's voltage curve and the early shutdown stops.

Fast charging unavailable on Surface Pro 8 after swapping the battery

The Surface Pro 8 uses USB-PD negotiation to determine charge rate. On a fresh cell, the charge IC may not approve elevated current until it has completed one accepted charge cycle at standard rate. Plug into the original Surface charger — not a third-party USB-C adapter — and let it complete a full charge without interruption. After that first accepted cycle, USB-PD negotiation runs normally and fast charge becomes available again.

My Surface Pro 8 is showing 40% battery but it just shut off without warning — is the new battery faulty?

The battery is not faulty. The fuel gauge IC inside the Surface Pro 8 was calibrated to the original cell's voltage curve, and the new cell reads differently under load — so Windows gets an inaccurate state-of-charge signal and shuts down too early. Run the device down to automatic shutoff on battery power alone, then charge uninterrupted to 100% without using the device. The battery percentage on my Surface Pro 8 keeps jumping around — it dropped from 80% to 55% in five minutes then climbed back up.

Percentage jumping after a battery swap is a fuel gauge drift problem, not a cell defect. The IC is estimating capacity against old calibration data, so any load spike — screen brightness, WiFi burst — causes it to misread the voltage drop as a larger capacity loss than it is. One full discharge-to-shutoff followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100% recalibrates the IC against the new cell. After that cycle, the percentage readout stabilises.

Surface Pro 8 gets warm near the top edge while charging the new battery — is the charge IC going to damage the cell?

Warmth during the first few charge cycles on a new lithium-polymer cell is normal. The charge IC runs slightly higher current while it characterises the new cell's internal resistance, which generates a small amount of heat. Surface Pro 8 thermal management is rated to handle this — if the device is warm but not hot to the touch and the fan is not running continuously, nothing is wrong. Check that the vent area near the kickstand hinge is not obstructed, and let the first charge complete fully.
