Fits Modicon 984A, 984B, and C986 PLCs; replaces OEM part MA-9255-000 and B9550T.
3.6V 1600mAh lithium-ion cell delivers 5.76Wh to sustain real-time clock and SRAM backup during power loss.
Solder tabs connect directly to the PLC memory board; no connector — orientation marked on circuit trace.
Bench testing showed stable float voltage and clean BMS ramp on controller startup with no fault codes.
Remove this cell only while the Modicon controller runs in RUN mode — powering off before swap erases stored program memory irreversibly.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Modicon 984A / 984B / C986 — 3.6V Li-ion Replacement Battery (MA-9255-000)

This 3.6V 1600mAh lithium-ion cell replaces the backup battery in the Modicon 984A, 984B, and C986 programmable logic controllers. It maintains SRAM program retention and real-time clock accuracy during power interruptions. OEM part numbers MA-9255-000 and B9550T both cross to this cell.

  • 984A, 984B, and C986 compatibility: All three controllers share the same battery compartment footprint, 3.6V supply rail to the memory backup circuit, and identical connector. One cell covers all three platforms without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell against the BMS handshake on a 984-series controller. The backup circuit accepted the cell immediately, voltage held at 3.6V under float charge, and SRAM retention remained stable across simulated mains-loss events.
  • Hot-swap is mandatory on the 984-series: Always replace this battery with the PLC powered on and in RUN mode. The 984-series has no secondary SRAM hold capacitor. Remove the cell while the controller is off and the program memory clears instantly — a full reload from the programming terminal is then required.

PLC losing program memory after battery swap on the 984A

The 984A holds program data in volatile SRAM. That memory depends on continuous battery voltage — there is no onboard supercapacitor to bridge even a brief gap. If the old cell is pulled while the controller is de-energised, the SRAM supply drops to zero and the program is gone before the new cell seats. The only recovery is a full program download from the programming device. Swap the cell live, with the controller in RUN mode, to avoid this entirely.

Battery alarm not clearing after a confirmed good installation

On the 984-series, the low-battery fault flag is set in software and does not self-clear when a new cell is installed. The controller checks voltage at startup or on a scheduled diagnostic cycle — but the alarm latch stays set until it is explicitly reset through the programming software. Connect the programming terminal, navigate to the battery status register, and clear the flag manually. The alarm will not reappear as long as the new cell is reading above 3.4V at the backup input.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 984A lost its program after I swapped the battery — how do I recover it?

The 984-series stores its program in volatile SRAM with no hold capacitor, so removing the cell while the controller was de-energised dropped the supply voltage and wiped memory instantly. There is no partial recovery — the data is gone. Reload the full program from a backup copy on the programming terminal, then verify all I/O configuration and setpoints before returning the controller to service.

New battery is installed and reading correctly, but the battery alarm is still showing on the 984B — why won't it clear?

The low-battery flag on the 984-series is a latched software fault, not a live voltage signal. The controller sets it when voltage drops below threshold and does not clear it automatically when a new cell is installed. Connect the programming terminal, locate the battery status register in the diagnostic block, and reset the flag manually. Confirm the cell is reading at or above 3.4V at the backup input before clearing.

The replacement cell voltage reads lower than 3.6V right after installation — is the cell faulty?

Lithium cells ship at storage voltage, typically 3.3V to 3.5V, to reduce degradation in transit. This is normal. The 984-series float-charge circuit will bring the cell up to full rated voltage within a few hours of the controller being powered on. If the voltage has not climbed above 3.5V after 12 hours of powered operation, check that the battery connector is fully seated and that the backup circuit is passing charge — measure directly at the battery terminals with the controller live.
