Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Motorola Radius P110 — 7.5V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (HNN8148)
This is a 7.5V, 1800mAh nickel-metal hydride battery for the Motorola Radius P110 two-way radio. It replaces OEM part numbers HNN8148, HNN8148A, and HNN8148B. The cell format, connector, and BMS profile match the original P110 battery specification.
- Radius P110 platform fit: The P110 shares a single battery format across its production run. Voltage rail stays at 7.5V and the connector pinout is consistent across HNN8148 variants A and B, so all three OEM part numbers draw from the same physical pack specification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through transmit loads on the P110 platform. The BMS handled the PTT current spike without tripping, and the cell voltage held steady through repeated key-up events at full RF output.
- First insertion into the P110 charger dock: If the dock LED blinks fault on first insertion, remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The P110 charger requires a clean contact cycle to complete the BMS handshake before it accepts the pack for charging.
Why the Radius P110 cuts out mid-transmission on a new Ni-MH pack
Ni-MH cells ship at partial storage voltage — typically around 6.8V to 7.0V on a fresh pack. The P110's BMS treats a sharp voltage dip during the transmit current surge as a brownout condition and cuts the RF stage. This is not a faulty battery. Run one or two full charge cycles before heavy use and the cells will hold voltage more firmly under transmit load. After conditioning, PTT cutouts during normal use should stop.
Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after fitting a new HNN8148
The P110 reads voltage thresholds to drive its bar indicator — it has no fuel gauge chip. A new Ni-MH pack at storage voltage sits below the threshold for a full bar display, so the radio shows one bar short even with a healthy cell inside. Charge the pack fully before reading the indicator. After a complete charge cycle, resting voltage should sit at or above 7.5V and the bar display will reflect actual cell state.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Radius P110 charger dock is blinking a fault LED and won't start charging the new HNN8148 — what's causing it?
The dock fault LED almost always means the pack voltage is below the charger's acceptance threshold, or the gold contact strip isn't making clean contact. Remove the battery, wipe the contacts on both the pack and the dock with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. If the fault clears, the charger will begin the charge cycle normally. If the pack has been in storage for an extended period and voltage has dropped below roughly 6.0V, the dock may need a trickle pre-charge cycle to bring the cells up before it accepts a full charge.
The P110 drops to noticeably weaker audio and reduced TX output partway through a shift — is the battery failing?
This is voltage sag under sustained RF output, not a failed battery. Ni-MH cells show steeper voltage drop than lithium under continuous high-draw loads, and the P110 steps down transmit power when pack voltage falls below its operating floor. Check that the pack has completed at least two full charge cycles — unconditioned Ni-MH cells sag harder than broken-in ones. If sag persists after conditioning, measure resting voltage after a full charge; it should read at or above 7.5V.
The new HNN8148 pack was inserted correctly but the charger dock never shows a full-charge green light — it just stays on amber indefinitely.
An Ni-MH charger uses delta-V detection to identify peak charge — a small voltage drop signals a full cell. If the cell impedance is higher than the charger expects on a new pack, the delta-V signal is weaker and the dock can miss the termination point, holding on amber. Let the charge run for a full cycle regardless. On the second charge, the cells will have gone through one conditioning pass and delta-V termination will trigger correctly, ending at green.
