Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Nissin KF4 / KF4A — 14.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BP-53)
This is a 14.4V, 3400mAh Li-ion replacement for the Nissin BP-53 battery pack. It fits the KF4 and KF4A professional flash units. Same voltage, same form factor, same connector as the original.
- KF4 and KF4A compatibility: Both flash units share the same 14.4V power rail, BP-53 connector, and BMS handshake protocol. One battery covers either model without any modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on flash hardware, monitoring BMS cutoff thresholds at both the top and bottom of the voltage window. Cell balance held consistent across multiple discharge cycles.
- First-use flash cycle: After fitting the new pack, fire a full manual burst sequence — full power, rapid recycle — before your first shoot. The KF4's power management firmware maps available capacity during high-demand discharge, not idle. Skipping this step causes early low-power warnings during the first real session.
Why the KF4 throttles recycle speed with a new battery installed
The KF4 monitors voltage recovery between flashes to estimate available current. A new pack with uncalibrated state-of-charge registers conservative internal readings in the firmware. This causes the unit to extend recycle intervals as a protective measure, even at full charge. Running three to five full-power manual cycles resets the firmware's current model and restores normal recycle speed.
Pack charges to full but flash fires once then won't recycle
This is a BMS overcurrent trip, not a capacity issue. The capacitor bank inside the KF4 draws a sharp current spike the moment it begins charging after a flash discharge. If the pack has been sitting unused for an extended period, the BMS resets its overcurrent threshold to a conservative default. Reconnect the battery, power the unit on, and allow it to sit idle for 60 seconds before firing — this gives the BMS time to register the load profile. If the trip repeats, charge the pack to full and retry; the cutoff threshold relaxes once cell voltage holds above 16.0V under no load.

Frequently Asked Questions
My KF4 won't recognise the new battery after the unit sat in my bag for two months — the display shows nothing when I press the power button.
The BP-53 BMS enters a low-power sleep state when cell voltage drops below approximately 12.5V during long storage. In this state the flash unit sees no communication signal from the pack and treats it as absent. Connect the battery to its charger for at least 20 minutes before inserting it into the flash — this wakes the BMS and raises cell voltage above the recognition threshold. Once the charger confirms it is receiving the pack, a full charge cycle will restore normal operation.
The KF4 powers on and shows full charge, but readings on the battery indicator drop erratically and jump back up during a shoot — is the pack faulty?
This is a voltage-threshold calibration issue, not a defective cell. The KF4's charge indicator is tied to resting cell voltage, and a new pack that has not completed a full discharge-charge cycle has not yet established a stable voltage-to-capacity curve in the firmware. The display reads the instantaneous terminal voltage under capacitor recharge load, which causes the percentage to fluctuate. Complete two full manual discharge and recharge cycles and the indicator will track smoothly.
The battery will not take a charge after the KF4 was stored assembled with the battery inside over winter — the charger LED stays green immediately without cycling.
A charger showing instant green on a depleted pack means the BMS has tripped into deep-discharge lockout, and the charger is reading zero current draw as a completed charge. The cells need a recovery charge at low current before the BMS will allow a normal charge cycle. Use a Li-ion recovery charger or a charger with a recovery/boost mode set to 0.1A and apply it until terminal voltage reaches 13.0V — at that point, switch to a standard charge cycle on the original Nissin charger to bring the pack to full.
