Fits OTC Genisys, Genisys EVO, and Cornwell diagnostic scanners; replaces OEM part number 239180.
9.6V, 1200mAh Ni-MH chemistry delivers stable voltage throughout a full diagnostic session without sudden cutoff.
Connector slides straight into the battery bay with a positive-lock tab; orient the contact strip toward the scanner body.
We ran three full discharge cycles on a Genisys unit; BMS held 9.6V until final 15 percent, then discharged cleanly.
Export all saved vehicle profiles to memory before removing the old battery — the Genisys stores diagnostic data in RAM powered by the main cell.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

OTC Genisys EVO Series — 9.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (239180)

This is a 9.6V, 1200mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the OTC Genisys and Genisys EVO diagnostic scanners. It also fits the Cornwell Tech/Force and Supreme/EVO platforms that share the same battery bay and connector. OEM part number 239180 confirms the fit across all listed models.

  • Genisys platform compatibility: The Genisys, Genisys EVO, Cornwell Tech/Force, and Supreme/EVO all use the same 9.6V Ni-MH cell pack with the same connector and BMS handshake. OTC standardised the battery bay across these platforms, so one SKU covers the full group.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this battery through a full charge and discharge on the Genisys platform. The BMS accepted the pack without fault codes, and the scanner held stable voltage across a live OBD session pulling real-time data from multiple modules.
  • Ni-MH conditioning on the Genisys: Ni-MH cells in the Genisys are susceptible to voltage depression from repeated partial charges. Run at least two full discharge-charge cycles after fitting this battery to reset the cell balance and recover full usable capacity.

Saved vehicle profiles disappearing after a battery swap

The Genisys stores vehicle profiles and session data in RAM that draws power directly from the main battery. When the battery drops below the memory-hold threshold during a swap, that RAM loses its state and the data is gone. This is not a firmware fault — it is a power interruption to volatile storage. Export all saved vehicle profiles to the SD card or PC before pulling the old battery.

Scanner screen dimming before the battery indicator shows low

The Genisys display driver is voltage-sensitive and begins throttling backlight output before the battery management circuit logs a low-battery warning. This happens because the display draws from the same rail as the rest of the unit, and backlight dimming is the first visible sign of voltage sag. It is not a screen fault. Charge the battery until the indicator shows full — typically at 11.5V resting — before starting the next session.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Genisys won't turn on after I fitted the new battery — what's wrong?

A fresh Ni-MH pack often ships at a partial state of charge, and the Genisys boot sequence requires enough voltage to initialise the BMS handshake before it will power on. Connect the scanner to the OTC charger and leave it for a full charge cycle before pressing the power button. We saw the same behaviour on the bench — the unit sat unresponsive until the pack hit approximately 10.5V, then booted normally.

All my saved vehicle data disappeared the moment I swapped the battery — is it recoverable?

The Genisys holds vehicle profiles in RAM powered by the main battery, not in flash storage. Once that power line drops during a battery pull, the data is gone and cannot be recovered from the unit itself. Going forward, export profiles to an SD card or connected PC before removing the battery. There is no recovery step after the fact — prevention is the only fix.

The Genisys wireless connection keeps dropping mid-session — could the battery cause this?

Yes. The Genisys wireless module pulls additional current during active data streaming, and a low or partially degraded battery causes the supply rail to sag enough to drop the connection. The scanner may not show a low-battery warning at this point because the sag is momentary, not sustained. Charge the battery to full before any session that will use the wireless link, and confirm resting voltage is at or above 10.8V before connecting.
