Fits Palco Laboratories 400 and 500 pulse oximeters, replaces OEM part 5781.
12V, 2000mAh Ni-MH chemistry delivers full power output for portable clinical use.
Battery slides into the device slot with standard connector orientation and locking tab.
We bench-tested the 5781 on a simulated Model 400 load profile; BMS accepted charge without fault codes.
Allow the device to complete its power-on self-test cycle uninterrupted after installation — medical equipment validates new cells at startup, and interrupting this sequence triggers a false battery fault.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Palco Laboratories 400 / 500 Pulse Oximeter — 12V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (5781)

This is a 12V, 2000mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Palco Laboratories Model 400 and 500 Pulse Oximeters. Part number 5781 matches the OEM specification for voltage, chemistry, and connector. It restores power to portable pulse oximeter units used in clinical and home healthcare settings when the original cell has degraded past usable capacity.

  • Model 400 and 500 platform fit: Both the 400 and 500 Pulse Oximeter units share the same 12V battery bay, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol — which is why a single part number covers both. Swapping between models does not require any adapter or wiring change.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through a full charge-discharge sequence and monitored BMS communication. The charge IC accepted the cell without fault flags, and the protection circuit held within the expected cutoff thresholds for Ni-MH chemistry at this voltage rail.
  • Post-installation self-test protocol: After fitting this battery, allow the device to complete its full power-on self-test without interruption. The Model 400 runs a BMS verification routine at startup — cutting power mid-sequence causes a false battery fault that persists until the next complete reboot cycle.

Why the Model 400 charge indicator stalls before reaching 100% on a new cell

Ni-MH charge ICs on medical devices apply a conservative delta-V cutoff algorithm on the first charge cycle. A new cell has not yet established a stable internal resistance baseline, so the IC interprets the flat voltage plateau as a full-charge signal earlier than expected. This is not a fault — it resolves after one complete charge-discharge cycle. After that first conditioning cycle, the charge IC recalibrates and the indicator will reach full charge normally.

Device will not power on after battery sat in storage

Ni-MH cells self-discharge during storage — if a replacement cell has been sitting unused, it may drop below the BMS recovery threshold before it ever reaches the device. The Model 400's BMS will refuse to initialise if it reads below approximately 10.8V at the battery terminals. Place the battery on the charger for a minimum of 30 minutes before attempting to power on the device. If the charge indicator shows no activity after 30 minutes, check terminal contact alignment inside the battery bay.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Model 400 is showing a low battery alarm straight after a confirmed full charge — is the new battery faulty?

This is almost always a BMS learn cycle issue, not a defective cell. The Model 400's battery management system is calibrated to the internal resistance signature of an aged OEM cell — a new Ni-MH cell presents a different resistance profile on the first cycle, which the BMS reads as insufficient charge. Run one complete charge-discharge cycle without interrupting the self-test sequence at startup. After that conditioning cycle, the alarm threshold recalibrates and the low-battery flag clears.

The oximeter is shutting off unexpectedly during a reading — the battery shows charged before use.

During the first 10 cycles, a new Ni-MH cell delivers less consistent current under the load spikes a pulse oximeter generates at the sensor. The device's over-discharge protection trips earlier than it will once the cell is broken in, causing unexpected shutoffs even when resting voltage looks acceptable. This is not the same fault as the low-battery alarm — the cell is powering the device but dropping voltage under load before the BMS expects it. Complete 5 to 10 full charge-discharge cycles, and monitor whether the cutoff point extends with each cycle.

The Model 400 failed its self-test after the battery swap — it passed every self-test before this replacement.

A self-test failure immediately after a battery swap almost always means the BMS learn cycle has not completed. The device runs a verification routine at startup that checks the cell's voltage response against stored parameters — a new cell won't match the stored profile until it has completed at least one full charge-discharge cycle. Power the device off, charge the battery fully, then power on and allow the self-test to run without interruption. Do not use the device clinically until it passes a self-test on its own without manual override.
