Fits Retevis RB628 handheld radio; replaces OEM battery BL628 and BL667.
Delivers 3.7V at 1800mAh—sufficient capacity for full-shift portable operation on this UHF platform.
Uses standard two-way radio connector; slides into RB628 battery slot with positive terminal up and seats flush.
Bench testing shows clean BMS ramp on first insertion; no dock rejection or fault signaling observed.
If the RB628 charger dock blinks red on first insertion, remove the battery, wipe the gold contacts with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly—this platform requires clean contact cycle before the BMS handshake completes.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Retevis RB628 — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BL628 / BL667)

The BL628 / BL667 is a 3.7V, 1800mAh Li-ion battery for the Retevis RB628 handheld two-way radio. It slots directly into the RB628 battery bay and connects to the radio's BMS handshake circuit. Capacity figure is taken from the product specification — 1800mAh at 6.66Wh.

  • RB628 platform fit: The RB628 runs a single-cell 3.7V rail with a BMS that monitors cell voltage and transmit-current draw. Both BL628 and BL667 part numbers reference the same physical pack format and connector pinout used across this Retevis compact radio line.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through simulated PTT bursts and monitored the BMS response at peak transmit current. The protection circuit held within expected cutoff thresholds and did not trip under normal push-to-talk loads.
  • First insertion on the RB628 charger dock: If the dock LED flashes a fault on first seat, remove the pack, wipe the contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The RB628 charger requires a clean contact cycle to complete the BMS handshake before it will begin charging.

Why the RB628 cuts out mid-transmission on a new BL628

A new Li-ion cell ships at storage voltage — typically around 3.6V to 3.7V, not a full charge. When PTT is pressed, transmit current spikes sharply. If the cell voltage is already near the BMS low-voltage threshold, that spike can trigger an overcurrent or undervoltage cutoff, dropping the transmission. This is not a faulty pack — it is the BMS doing its job on a cell that has not yet been fully charged. Charge the battery completely in the dock before the first use in the field.

Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after fitting a new BL628

The RB628 reads battery level through voltage thresholds at the radio's input — it has no fuel gauge chip, only a simple voltage-to-bar map. A new pack at storage voltage reads lower on that map than a freshly charged one, so the radio may show two bars instead of three. This is a voltage reading, not a capacity fault. Fully charge the new pack first and the indicator will reflect the correct full-charge voltage — typically 4.2V at cell level.

Frequently Asked Questions

My RB628 cuts out every time I hold PTT for more than a few seconds — is the new battery tripping the BMS?

Yes, that is most likely a BMS overcurrent trip caused by the transmit current spike hitting a cell that is not fully charged. New Li-ion packs ship at storage voltage, which sits close to the BMS low-voltage cutoff. Charge the BL628 fully in the dock before first use. Once the cell is at 4.2V, the headroom above the cutoff threshold is wide enough to absorb the PTT current surge without tripping.

The RB628 charger dock is blinking a fault LED and will not start charging the new BL628 — what is happening?

The dock checks for a valid BMS handshake through the contact strip before it accepts a pack for charging. If the gold contacts on the battery or dock are contaminated — even light oxidation from storage — the handshake fails and the dock shows a fault. Remove the pack, wipe the contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat it firmly. That clears the contact resistance and lets the dock complete the handshake; the LED should switch to charging within a few seconds.

The RB628 dropped to noticeably weaker audio and shorter TX range mid-shift — battery or radio fault?

This is voltage sag under sustained RF output, not a radio fault. As the cell discharges toward the lower end of its voltage curve, the radio's output stage gets less headroom and reduces transmit power to stay within operating limits. The BL628 at 3.7V nominal has a discharge curve that drops faster under heavy TX duty cycles than under light use. Swap in a freshly charged pack at the start of a heavy-use shift and keep a second charged pack available for rotation.
