Fits Icom IC-M37 and IC-M37E marine VHF transceivers, replacing OEM BP-296 battery pack directly.
Voltage output 3.7V nominal with 2300mAh capacity supplies sustained transmit power during marine operations.
Gold connector interface seats vertically into radio battery slot with positive contact on upper tab.
Bench test showed stable voltage delivery under PTT transmit loads without BMS cutout or sag events.
On first insertion into the IC-M37 charging dock, remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly if dock shows fault LED — the Icom platform requires clean contact to accept the new BMS handshake.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Icom IC-M37 / IC-M37E — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BP-296)

The BP-296 is a 3.7V, 2300mAh Li-ion battery for the Icom IC-M37 and IC-M37E handheld marine VHF transceivers. These are compact ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore radios used in demanding on-water environments. This battery slots directly into the standard battery compartment on both variants.

  • IC-M37 and IC-M37E compatibility: Both models share the same 3.7V power rail, BP-296 footprint, and BMS handshake protocol. The battery connector pinout and contact spacing are identical across the M37 and M37E, so one part number covers both.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran the BP-296 through full charge and transmit-load cycles on the IC-M37 platform. The BMS handled PTT-triggered current spikes without tripping, and the charger dock accepted the pack without a fault LED on first insertion.
  • First-insertion contact check on the IC-M37 dock: If the dock shows a fault LED on initial seating, remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The IC-M37 dock requires a clean contact cycle to complete the BMS handshake before charging begins.

Why the IC-M37 cuts out mid-transmission on a fresh BP-296

A new Li-ion cell ships at storage voltage — typically around 3.6V — not at a full 4.2V charge. When the IC-M37 transmits, it draws a sustained current spike that can push a low-state-of-charge cell below the BMS undervoltage cutoff threshold. The radio shuts off mid-PTT not because the battery is faulty, but because the BMS is protecting the cell from dropping further. Charge the BP-296 fully in the dock before first use to bring the cell to 4.2V and give the BMS the headroom it needs.

Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after fitting the BP-296

The IC-M37 uses a voltage-threshold bar indicator — each bar corresponds to a resting voltage band. A new cell at storage voltage reads lower than a fully charged pack, so the indicator may show one or two bars even on a brand-new battery. This is not a capacity fault. Charge the pack fully in the dock; once the cell rests above approximately 4.0V, the indicator will reflect the correct charge state.

Frequently Asked Questions

The IC-M37 shuts off every time I press PTT — is the BP-296 faulty?

Almost certainly not. A new Li-ion cell ships at storage voltage, and the transmit current spike from the IC-M37 can push a low cell below the BMS cutoff threshold, cutting the radio off mid-transmission. Charge the BP-296 fully in the dock before use. Once the cell reaches 4.2V, the BMS has the headroom to handle sustained PTT load without tripping.

The IC-M37 charger dock is blinking a fault LED and won't start charging the new BP-296 — what's wrong?

The dock is failing the BMS handshake, usually because the gold contact strip on the battery has a thin oxide layer or residue from packaging. Remove the battery, wipe the contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat it firmly. If the fault LED persists, check that the cell voltage is above 3.0V — a pack that has dropped below the dock's acceptance threshold will need a compatible charger that supports recovery charging to bring it back into range.

The IC-M37 drops to noticeably weaker audio and reduced TX output partway through a shift — what causes that on a new battery?

This is voltage sag under sustained RF output load. When a Li-ion cell is partially discharged, its internal impedance rises, and the voltage drop across that impedance becomes large enough under transmit current to push the radio into reduced-power mode. The cell is not failing — it is a normal electrochemical behaviour that worsens as the pack ages. Top up the pack at the start of each shift rather than running it down fully, and you will stay above the sag threshold throughout the day.
