This is a 7.4V, 700mAh Li-ion replacement battery for the Samsung SC-D381, SC-D382, SC-D383, SC-D385, and compatible MiniDV camcorders using the IA-BP80WA battery. It slots into the same bay as the OEM pack and connects via the same contact plate. Capacity matches the original Samsung specification at 5.18Wh.

  • SC-D38x series compatibility: The SC-D381 through SC-D385 share a common battery bay, contact layout, and BMS communication protocol. One cell fits the entire run of that camcorder line without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on SC-D38x hardware. The BMS handshake completed on first insertion, the charge indicator activated normally, and protection circuits tripped correctly at low-voltage threshold.
  • First-use charge cycle on SC-D38x: Seat the battery in the camcorder body and run one full charge through the OEM charger or camera body before shooting. Some SC-D38x units need this cycle to map the new cell's discharge curve correctly for the battery-remaining indicator to read accurately.

Why the SC-D38x battery indicator reads incorrectly after fitting a replacement cell

The SC-D38x uses a voltage-threshold system to estimate remaining charge. A new cell's discharge curve sits slightly differently from a worn OEM pack the camera body has been tracking. On first use, the indicator may jump or show full when the cell is partially charged. Running one complete charge-discharge cycle through the camera body lets the firmware recalibrate its threshold mapping to the new cell. After that single cycle, the indicator tracks reliably.

This happens when the BMS inside the camcorder has not yet authenticated the replacement cell. The camera reads the contact voltage at insertion and may flag it as absent or incompatible if the cell resting voltage sits outside its expected narrow window. Remove the battery, insert it again firmly to ensure full contact, then place the unit on charge via the OEM charger. Once charge current flows and the BMS registers the cell, the rejection clears. Confirm the cell is reading above 7.0V resting before reinserting.

My SC-D381 shows the battery symbol flashing immediately after I put in the new battery — is it dead on arrival?

Almost always no. The SC-D38x flashes the battery indicator when the BMS hasn't completed its handshake with the replacement cell. Connect the camcorder to the OEM charger straight away and let it charge fully without interruption. That charge cycle registers the new cell with the firmware and clears the flashing indicator. If it still flashes after a full charge cycle, check the contact pins on the battery bay for corrosion or debris.

The battery percentage on my SC-D383 keeps jumping — it shows 80%, drops to 20%, then climbs again mid-recording.

The SC-D38x maps remaining charge against a set of voltage thresholds tuned to the original OEM cell's discharge curve. A replacement cell discharges at a slightly different rate across those thresholds, so the indicator misreads the curve and jumps. Run two full charge-to-empty cycles through the camera body without interruption. After those cycles, the firmware has enough data to track the new cell's actual discharge curve and the percentage stabilises.

My SC-D381 records noticeably less footage on the replacement battery than it did on a fully fresh OEM pack — what's causing it?

At 700mAh and 5.18Wh, this cell matches the original Samsung specification exactly, so capacity itself is not the variable. The SC-D38x LCD, autofocus motor, and image stabilisation system all draw current continuously during recording, and this combined load varies depending on shooting conditions — bright LCD, extended zoom, and continuous IS can noticeably shorten a session on any 700mAh cell. Check that LCD brightness is not set to maximum and that IS is only active when needed. Also confirm the cell was fully charged before use — the indicator calibration issue above can cause a cell that is only 70% charged to display as full.
