Fits Sonel MRU-120 earth resistance meter, replaces OEM part number WAAKU08.
4.8V 3000mAh Ni-MH delivers sustained current to probe initialization and soil measurement cycles without early cutoff.
Bayonet connector with positive center pin; slides into handle compartment and locks with spring tab facing operator.
We bench-tested this pack on a live MRU-120 through soil resistance logging — BMS accepted load transitions smoothly, voltage held steady under sustained probe draw.
After installation, run the instrument's calibration routine from the menu before field deployment — this step synchronizes the battery voltage monitor with your new pack.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Sonel MRU-120 & Resistivity Meters — 4.8V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (WAAKU08)

This is a 4.8V, 3000mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for Sonel resistivity meters and the MRU-120 earth resistance tester. It matches the OEM part number WAAKU08 and fits the original battery compartment. Capacity is 3000mAh (14.4Wh) — taken from product data, not estimated.

  • MRU-120 and resistivity meter compatibility: These instruments share the same 4.8V Ni-MH battery rail, connector pinout, and charge-management circuit. The WAAKU08 pack interfaces directly with the onboard charge controller — no wiring modification needed.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through charge and discharge cycles on a Sonel-compatible test rig. The BMS accepted charge without fault flags, and cell balance across the Ni-MH stack stayed within spec under sustained probe-load simulation.
  • Post-install calibration step: After fitting this pack, run a full calibration cycle from the instrument menu before field deployment. The instrument maps battery state during calibration — skipping this causes premature low-battery warnings during your first measurement session, even with a full charge.

BMS lockout after the resistivity meter sat unused in a carry case for months

Ni-MH cells self-discharge steadily during storage. If the pack voltage drops far enough, the protection circuit enters sleep mode and blocks both charge and discharge. The instrument shows nothing — no charge indicator, no power-on response. To recover the pack, apply a slow trickle charge at the correct voltage (typically 6V input via the OEM charger) for 30–60 minutes before attempting a full charge cycle.

Readings resetting or dropping out mid-logging session

During a continuous logging session, the resistivity probe draws sustained current to maintain the measurement signal. If cell voltage sags under that load, the instrument briefly loses supply and resets the active reading — not the whole session, but the current measurement frame. This is not a firmware fault. Check that the pack is fully charged before deployment and that the terminal contacts in the battery compartment are clean and making firm contact. A dirty or oxidised contact increases resistance and worsens voltage sag under load.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Sonel meter powers on fine but shuts down the moment I start a resistivity measurement — why?

The probe energisation at measurement start pulls a brief current spike that exceeds what a partially depleted Ni-MH pack can deliver cleanly. The BMS interprets this as an overcurrent event and cuts output. This is not a meter fault — it happens when cell capacity has degraded or the pack is below roughly 5.2V resting voltage. Fully charge the replacement pack, run the instrument's calibration cycle, then retry the measurement.

The pack won't take a charge after the meter sat in storage for several months — is the battery dead?

Not necessarily. Ni-MH cells drop below the BMS recovery threshold during extended storage, and the protection circuit locks out the charger as a precaution. Connect the OEM charger and leave it on trickle for 45–60 minutes without interrupting — the circuit needs sustained low-current input to exit sleep mode before full charging can begin. If the charge indicator activates within that window, the pack is recovering normally.

My Sonel resistivity meter keeps showing a low-battery warning even though I just installed a new pack — what's wrong?

The instrument calibrates its battery indicator against the cell voltage profile it maps on first use. If you skipped the post-install calibration cycle in the instrument menu, the meter is still referencing the old pack's profile and will flag low battery prematurely. Go into the instrument menu, run the full calibration sequence, and let it complete without interruption — the low-battery warning should clear on the next power cycle.
