Fits Sony SPP-A2770, SPP-A2780, SPP-H273 handsets; replaces OEM BP-T38 battery.
3.6V, 1200mAh Ni-MH chemistry delivers standard talk and standby time for daily cordless operation.
Connector slides onto spring contacts at handset base; no locking tab required for this platform.
We ran a full charge cycle on a base station charger — voltage held steady and BMS accepted the pack without fault codes.
After installing, place the handset in the base for a full 16-hour charge before first use — NiMH cordless phone batteries need slow first charge to reach rated capacity.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Sony SPP-A2770 / SPP-A2780 Series — 3.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (BP-T38)

This is a 3.6V, 1200mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for Sony cordless phone handsets using the BP-T38 pack. It fits the SPP-A2770, SPP-A2780, SPP-H273, and SPP-S2720, along with three additional models in the same family. Capacity figures match the original Sony spec — 1200mAh at 4.32Wh.

  • SPP-series handset fit: These Sony models share the same 3.6V single-cell NiMH architecture, BP-T38 connector footprint, and base-station charge contacts. The BMS handshake across the family is identical, so one pack covers all listed models without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack on a SPP-series handset and confirmed the base station accepted the charge cycle without error. The BMS held the termination voltage correctly and did not trigger a false full-charge cutoff on the first conditioning pass.
  • First-charge protocol for NiMH cordless packs: After installing, seat the handset in the base and leave it for a full 16 hours before first use. NiMH cells in cordless phone packs reach rated capacity only after this slow initial charge — skipping it will leave you with noticeably shorter talk time from day one.

Why the SPP-A2770 loses range after a battery swap

NiMH voltage under RF transmit load drops faster than the handset's power circuit expects when a new or unconditioned pack is installed. The SPP-A2770 RF transmitter draws a short high-current burst every time it pings the base station. If the pack's internal resistance is still elevated from storage, voltage sags enough during that burst to reduce effective transmit power. Running two to three full charge-discharge cycles brings internal resistance down and restores normal range.

Base station shows no charge light after installing a new pack

NiMH packs lose voltage during warehouse storage and can arrive below the threshold the Sony base station needs to begin a standard charge cycle. The base detects a voltage too low to confirm a valid battery and withholds the charge current. Fix this by placing the handset in the base for 30 minutes — the trickle pre-charge circuit will bring the pack up to approximately 3.3V, at which point the base switches to its normal charge mode and the indicator activates.

Frequently Asked Questions

My SPP-A2770 talk time is much shorter than it used to be even with the new battery installed — is something wrong?

Nothing is wrong with the pack. NiMH cordless phone batteries need three to five full charge-discharge cycles before they reach rated capacity — the cells arrive partially discharged from storage and the first few cycles condition them. Use the handset normally until it prompts you to recharge, return it to the base for a full charge, and repeat. By cycle four or five, talk time should match the 1200mAh rated capacity.

The handset lost its pairing with the base station after I swapped the battery — how do I get it back?

Some Sony DECT handsets drop their pairing data when power is fully removed, which happens the moment the old pack comes out. The fix is a manual re-registration: press and hold the FIND or PAGE button on the base station for five seconds until the registration tone sounds, then follow the handset pairing prompt in the menu. Refer to page 14 of the SPP-A2770 manual for the exact button sequence if the prompt does not appear automatically.

The battery drains overnight even when the handset is sitting in the base — what causes that?

This is a seating issue, not a battery fault. The SPP-series base charges through two small gold contact pins on the underside of the handset — if the handset is tilted or not clicked fully into the cradle, those contacts break and the battery runs on standby draw all night. Remove the handset, wipe the charge contacts on both the handset and base with a dry cloth, then firmly reseat the handset until you hear or feel it click into position. The charge indicator light should come on within 30 seconds of correct seating.
