This is an 11.1V, 4200mAh Li-Polymer battery built to replace the original VGP-BPL1 and VGP-BPS1 cells. It fits the Sony VAIO VGN-U50, VGN-U70, VGN-U8G, VGN-U8C, and related U-series ultraportables. The VGN-U series platform shares one battery footprint and connector across the range, so one cell covers the full lineup.
- VGN-U series platform compatibility: Every model in the VAIO U-series runs the same 11.1V three-cell architecture with the same proprietary connector and BMS handshake protocol. Swapping between U50, U70, U8G, and U8C requires no adapter or firmware change — the BMS recognises the cell and begins charging without intervention.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell on a VGN-U70 unit. The BMS accepted the cell immediately, reported charging within 30 seconds of connection, and the fuel gauge IC began recalibrating across the first two full cycles as expected with a fresh Li-Polymer cell.
- First-cycle reset on VAIO U-series: After installing, run one full discharge to the hibernate cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. This forces the BIOS battery learn cycle to reset against the new cell and clears the inaccurate health warning that appears after every cell swap on VAIO U-series hardware.
BIOS reporting poor battery health immediately after installing a new cell
The VAIO U-series BIOS stores learned charge data from the previous cell in EEPROM. When a new cell arrives, that stored data no longer matches actual capacity, so the BIOS flags health as poor or degraded before any real discharge has occurred. This is not a fault with the replacement cell. Running two full discharge-to-hibernate and charge-to-100% cycles gives the fuel gauge IC enough data points to recalibrate and clears the warning. After cycle two, the health readout in BIOS and in Windows Battery should reflect the actual cell condition.
Laptop shutting down abruptly while the gauge still shows 20–25% remaining
This happens when the cell voltage drops below the BMS cutoff threshold under combined CPU and display load before the fuel gauge registers empty. On the compact VGN-U platform, the display backlight and Transmeta Crusoe processor together draw enough current to expose a voltage cliff in aged or uncalibrated cells. With a fresh cell, the fix is calibration — not hardware replacement. Discharge fully to hibernate cutoff, let the unit shut itself down, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. The VAIO shows a different Wh rating in system info than the battery spec — is the cell wrong?
The Wh figure shown in Windows or BIOS is pulled from the EEPROM data on the cell, which reflects the rated chemistry value programmed at manufacture. The physical cell in this replacement is rated at 46.62Wh, but if the EEPROM value differs from what the old battery reported, Windows will display a different number until the fuel gauge IC runs calibration cycles. Run two full discharge-to-hibernate then charge-to-100% cycles and the reported Wh will align with actual capacity.
The fuel gauge is jumping around wildly — showing 80%, then 40%, then 95% within minutes of unplugging.
The fuel gauge IC on the VGN-U series needs at least two full cycle passes against a new cell before its internal model is accurate. Fresh Li-Polymer cells have a slightly different discharge curve than an aged original, so the IC loses track of state-of-charge in the first cycle or two. Do not rely on the percentage readout yet. Run one full discharge to hibernate cutoff followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100%, then repeat once more. After the second complete cycle the gauge stabilises and tracks correctly.
New battery installed but the VAIO won't charge above 80% and stays stuck there.
Several VAIO BIOS versions include a charge limit setting that caps the cell at 80% to reduce long-term cell stress — this is a firmware decision, not a battery fault. Check the PowerPanel utility or BIOS power settings for a "Battery Care Function" or "Maximum Battery Life" option and disable it if you need full capacity. If no such setting appears, confirm the BIOS is not in a low-degradation mode left over from the previous battery's learn cycle by running a full discharge to hibernate cutoff and recharging uninterrupted to 100%.
