Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

SOUTHERN TELECOM MC1000 / MC1000HS — 3.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery
This is a 3.6V, 700mAh Ni-MH battery for the SOUTHERN TELECOM MC1000 and MC1000HS cordless phone handsets. It replaces the original pack when the handset no longer holds a charge or drops calls mid-conversation. Dimensions are 45.90 x 31.20 x 10.70mm — confirm these match your existing cell before fitting.
- MC1000 and MC1000HS compatibility: Both handsets share the same battery bay dimensions, connector pinout, and 3.6V charging rail from the base station. One battery fits both variants without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on the MC1000 platform. The BMS accepted the pack cleanly, the base station charge indicator lit correctly, and voltage held stable across the talk circuit under RF load.
- First charge on NiMH cordless handsets: Place the handset in the base for a full 16 hours before first use. NiMH cells shipped from storage sit at partial charge — a slow first charge lets the cells reach rated capacity. Skipping this step is the main reason new batteries test short on talk time.
Talk time shorter than original battery after replacement
NiMH cells need three to five full charge and discharge cycles to reach rated capacity. On cycle one, you may see noticeably shorter talk time — this is normal cell behaviour, not a fault. Each subsequent full cycle pushes the capacity closer to the rated 700mAh. Run the handset to low charge and return it to the base for a full 16-hour charge three to five times before drawing conclusions about capacity.
Base station charge light not activating on a freshly installed pack
NiMH cells in storage drift to a resting voltage below the threshold some base stations use to confirm a valid pack is seated. The base may show no charge light or an error indicator when the pack first goes in. Seat the handset firmly in the cradle and leave it undisturbed — most base stations will begin trickle charging within a few minutes once the voltage climbs above the acceptance floor. If the light still does not activate after 30 minutes, reseat the handset and check that the charging contacts on both the handset and base are clean and making solid contact.

Frequently Asked Questions
The handset loses range within a few metres of the base after swapping the battery — the original reached much further. What's causing it?
NiMH voltage sags under RF load when the cells haven't been fully conditioned. The transmit circuit in the MC1000 handset draws a burst of current each time it sends a signal to the base, and an under-conditioned cell can't sustain the voltage needed to maintain full transmit power. Run three to five full charge and discharge cycles first. After conditioning, check that voltage under load stays at or above 3.4V — if it drops lower, the cell is faulty.
The handset isn't pairing with the base after I fitted the new battery. It was paired before I changed it.
Removing the battery on some DECT cordless phones clears the handset registration from memory — the link between the handset and base drops when power is fully cut. Re-register the handset using the pairing procedure in the MC1000 manual: this typically involves holding the page or find button on the base while navigating to register on the handset menu. The battery swap itself is not the fault — it's the power interruption that triggers the re-pairing requirement.
The battery drains completely overnight even though the handset is sitting in the base. It was fine during the day.
This usually means the handset is not making solid contact with the charging pins in the cradle. If the handset sits even slightly tilted or forward in the base, the contacts can miss and the standby draw runs the pack flat by morning. Clean the charging contacts on both the handset base and the battery terminals with a dry cloth, then reseat the handset and check that it sits flush and level. If overnight drain continues after confirming contact, measure the base output voltage at the pins — it should read approximately 3.6V to 4.2V when no handset is seated.
