Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Southwestern Bell BP901 / BT901 — 3.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery
This is a 3.6V 1500mAh Ni-MH battery for Southwestern Bell cordless phone handsets using the BP901 and BT901 designations. It restores talk and standby function to handsets where the original cell no longer holds a useful charge. Voltage and chemistry match the original pack exactly.
- BP901 and BT901 handset compatibility: Both model designations use the same 3.6V single-cell Ni-MH pack with the same connector and footprint. The base station charges the pack through the handset contacts, so the physical fit and voltage rail both need to match — this battery meets both requirements.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this battery through a base station charge and discharge sequence. The cell accepted charge within the first 30 minutes and the BMS on the handset did not flag a fault. Voltage held steady across multiple talk events.
- First charge on NiMH cordless packs: After installing, seat the handset in the base and leave it for a full 16 hours before first use. NiMH cells shipped in a partially discharged state — a slow, full initial charge lets each cell in the pack reach rated capacity evenly. Skipping this step results in lower-than-rated capacity across early cycles.
Base station showing no charge or error light after installing a new pack
Southwestern Bell base stations use a voltage threshold to confirm a valid battery is present before starting the charge cycle. A new NiMH pack sitting in storage can drop below 3.0V, which puts it under the base acceptance threshold. The base reads this as no battery or a fault condition and refuses to charge. Place the handset in the base, wait 10–15 minutes — some bases will pulse a trickle charge to bring the cell up to ~3.2V before switching to normal charge mode. If the error light persists past 20 minutes, remove and reseat the handset to re-trigger the detection circuit.
Range drops noticeably when the battery is below half charge
DECT handsets regulate transmit power from the battery voltage rail. When a NiMH cell sags below roughly 3.4V under RF load, the handset's transmit output drops and range shrinks. This is more pronounced in the first few cycles before the pack is conditioned. Running three to five full charge-and-discharge cycles brings the cell to rated capacity and reduces voltage sag under load. If range is still short after five cycles, check that the handset contacts and base cradle pins are clean and making firm contact.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Southwestern Bell handset shows full bars on the battery indicator but cuts out mid-call — what's happening?
A NiMH cell that hasn't been fully conditioned can read near-full voltage at rest but sag sharply under the RF transmit load of an active call. The handset's fuel gauge reads resting voltage, not load voltage, so the indicator lies. Run three to five complete charge cycles — full 16-hour charge, use until the handset warns low, repeat — and the voltage sag under load will decrease. After conditioning, resting voltage at full charge should sit at or above 4.2V across the pack.
The handset lost its pairing with the base after I swapped the battery — how do I get it back?
Removing the battery cuts all power to the handset, and some Southwestern Bell DECT models clear their pairing data when power drops completely. This is a firmware behaviour in the handset, not a fault with the battery. Re-register the handset through the base station's page or find button — hold it for 5–10 seconds until the base enters pairing mode, then follow the handset's registration prompt. Once paired, the handset should stay registered as long as the battery is not removed again.
The battery drains completely overnight even when the handset is sitting in the base — is the battery faulty?
A handset that drains overnight in the base is almost always not making proper contact with the charging cradle pins. Inspect both the cradle contacts on the base and the charge contacts on the handset for dirt, oxidation, or slight misalignment. Clean both sets of contacts with a dry cloth or pencil eraser. If the contacts are clean and the base charge light still does not illuminate when the handset is seated, reseat the battery to ensure it is fully clicked into the handset battery compartment — a loose pack breaks the circuit between the cell and the charge contacts.
