Sprint AirCard 771S / 770S — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (W-5)
This is a 3.7V, 2000mAh Li-ion battery for the Sprint AirCard 771S and AirCard 770S mobile hotspots. Both units share the same battery bay, connector, and BMS handshake protocol. It slots in directly and the hotspot powers on without reconfiguration.
- AirCard 771S and 770S compatibility: Both models run the same 3.7V power rail with an identical physical footprint and BMS communication line. The same cell works across both units — no firmware difference affects battery recognition.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell under combined cellular modem and Wi-Fi radio load — the BMS held steady through the high-draw startup sequence and maintained voltage without false low-battery cutoffs.
- Ventilation during extended sessions: Keep the hotspot flat on a hard surface with the vents unobstructed. When connected devices are far away, the cellular radio runs at full output power. That heat builds up fast in a pocket or bag and accelerates cell degradation.
Hotspot disconnecting users mid-session on a new battery
When multiple devices connect simultaneously, the modem and Wi-Fi radio draw current at the same time. This combined load can pull the cell voltage down briefly — even on a new battery — triggering the BMS undervoltage cutoff. The hotspot reboots, and all connected sessions drop. Reducing the number of active connected devices or moving the hotspot closer to the cell tower lowers instantaneous draw and stops the dropout cycle.
AirCard 771S won't power on after sitting in a drawer
Li-ion cells self-discharge over storage time. If the voltage drops below roughly 3.0V, the BMS locks out normal charging to protect the cell. The hotspot shows nothing — no charging LED, no boot screen. Plug it in and leave it on the charger for 30–45 minutes without pressing the power button. The charger applies a trickle current that brings the cell back above the 3.0V BMS re-enable threshold, after which normal charging resumes.

My AirCard 771S battery drains way faster in one room of my house — is the battery bad?
The battery is likely fine. When the hotspot is far from a cell tower or has weak signal, the modem runs at maximum transmit power continuously — that alone can double the drain rate compared to a strong-signal location. Move the hotspot to a window or closer to an exterior wall. If drain normalises in that spot, the cell is working correctly and the issue is signal-driven radio draw, not capacity loss.
The hotspot feels hot to the touch after an hour and then shuts off — what's happening?
The battery's thermal protection circuit is triggering a shutdown before the BMS hits a cell-damaging temperature. Combined modem and Wi-Fi load generates sustained heat, and if the unit is enclosed — in a bag, on a soft surface, or near another heat source — that heat has nowhere to go. Place the hotspot on a hard, flat surface in open air. If it still shuts down, check that no debris is blocking the case vents.
New battery installed but the AirCard 771S still shows a low battery warning almost immediately after unplugging — why?
This usually means the battery gauge hasn't recalibrated to the new cell. The hotspot's fuel gauge was trained to the old degraded battery and still reads against that profile. Run the battery down until the hotspot shuts off on its own, then charge it to full in one uninterrupted session. That discharge–charge cycle resets the gauge and aligns the indicator with the actual 2000mAh capacity of the new cell.
