Why the MDA Touch shuts down suddenly at 20–30% after a cell swap

The MDA Touch fuel gauge IC was calibrated against the original cell's internal resistance profile. A new cell has a different discharge curve, so the IC underestimates remaining capacity and triggers a low-voltage shutdown before the percentage counter reaches zero. Under modem or screen load, the voltage drop on a fresh cell is steeper than the IC expects. One full discharge-charge cycle lets the coulomb counter relearn the curve and align the reported percentage with actual cell voltage.

Phone not powering on after the battery sat in storage

Li-ion cells self-discharge in storage. If the pack dropped below approximately 2.5V, the BMS enters lockout mode to prevent damage — the phone will show no response when you press the power button. Connect the MDA Touch to a wall charger, not a USB port, and leave it for 20–30 minutes before attempting to power on. A wall adapter delivers enough current to push the cell back above the BMS recovery threshold, typically around 2.9V, at which point the BMS releases and normal charging resumes.

Run one full discharge to near-empty and then a full charge to 100% without interrupting either cycle. After that single recalibration cycle, the coulomb counter resets its curve and the shutdowns stop.

The battery percentage jumps around erratically — one minute it reads 60%, the next it drops to 40% with no use.

Erratic percentage readings on the MDA Touch point to the fuel gauge IC recalibrating against a new cell it has never seen before. The IC uses stored impedance data from the old cell to estimate state of charge, and when the new cell's actual voltage doesn't match those stored values, the percentage counter corrects itself in visible jumps. This is not a fault in the replacement cell — it resolves after one complete discharge from 100% to near-empty followed by a full uninterrupted charge. Let the phone sit on charge until it hits 100% and stops drawing current before unplugging.

The MDA Touch gets noticeably warm near the battery compartment during the first charge — is that normal?

A new high-impedance cell generates more heat than a broken-in one during the first few charge cycles because the charge IC is pushing current into a cell with higher internal resistance than the aged pack it replaced. On the MDA Touch, this warmth near the battery bay during the first one or two charges is expected and decreases as internal resistance settles. If the phone feels hot to the point of being uncomfortable to hold, disconnect the charger and let it cool for ten minutes before resuming. Use a wall adapter rated at the standard 5V/1A output — avoid higher-current adapters until the cell has completed at least two full cycles.
