Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

TCL A986 / S600 / A980 / S500 — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (CAB32A0001C1)
This is a 3.7V, 1500mAh Li-ion replacement battery for the TCL A986, S600, A980, and S500 smartphones. It replaces OEM part numbers CAB32A0001C1, TLiB5AB, and CAB1500007C1. Swap this in when the original cell no longer holds a charge or shuts the phone down unexpectedly.
- A986 / S600 / A980 / S500 platform fit: These models share the same battery bay dimensions, connector pinout, and BMS handshake requirements — 51.61 x 50.72 x 5.24mm with a matching charge IC interface. One cell spec covers the full group.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through full charge and discharge on a TCL A986 unit. The BMS accepted the new cell without triggering a protection cutoff, and the charge IC stepped through trickle, CC, and CV phases cleanly.
- Fuel gauge recalibration on first cycle: Disable fast charging for the first complete discharge-charge cycle after installation. The fuel gauge IC in these TCL models calibrates its coulomb counter against the cell's discharge curve — fast charging on an uncalibrated cell pushes current before the IC has a reliable reference baseline.
Why the TCL A986 reports wrong battery percentage after a cell swap
The fuel gauge IC in the A986 stores a learned discharge curve from the original cell. When a new cell goes in, that stored curve no longer matches the actual voltage-to-capacity relationship of the replacement. The IC reads voltage and maps it to the old curve, so the displayed percentage drifts — often reading higher than actual under load. One full discharge down to automatic shutdown, followed by a complete charge to 100%, forces the IC to build a new reference curve against the replacement cell.
Sudden shutdown at 20–30% on the replacement cell
This happens when the cell voltage drops sharply under modem or screen load before the fuel gauge registers a low-battery warning. The A986's processor draws a burst current spike during LTE activity, and a cell with even slight internal resistance sags below the 3.2V hardware cutoff before the OS can gracefully power down. If shutdowns happen consistently around 20–30%, run one full charge cycle without fast charging so the fuel gauge recalibrates its low-voltage threshold. After recalibration, the OS will trigger a shutdown warning accurately before the cell hits 3.2V.

Frequently Asked Questions
My TCL A986 won't turn on at all after the replacement battery sat in a drawer for a few months — is the cell dead?
Likely not dead, but the BMS has locked the cell out after voltage dropped below 2.5V during storage. Connect the phone to a charger and leave it for 15–20 minutes without pressing the power button — the charge IC needs to push a trickle current into the cell long enough to bring it back above the BMS re-enable threshold of around 2.9V. Once the charging indicator appears on screen, the cell has recovered enough for normal charging to resume.
Fast charging worked on the old battery but won't kick in on the new one — the phone just trickle charges.
The USB-PD or proprietary fast charge handshake between the charge IC and the cell's BMS sometimes fails on the first cycle with a new cell. The charge IC defaults to trickle or standard 5V charging until it has verified the new BMS responds correctly. Run one full standard charge cycle to 100%, then restart the phone and reconnect the charger — most TCL A-series and S-series units re-negotiate the fast charge protocol successfully on the second cycle.
The phone feels noticeably warm near the battery area while charging the new cell — is that a fault?
Warmth during the first few charge cycles is normal with a new high-impedance cell. A fresh Li-ion cell has slightly higher internal resistance than a broken-in cell, so the charge IC dissipates more heat during the constant-current phase. If the back of the phone stays below uncomfortable-to-touch levels and the warmth fades after two or three full cycles, no action is needed. If the phone becomes hot enough to be uncomfortable or charging stops abnormally early, check that the connector is fully seated and the contacts are clean before charging again.
