Laptop shuts down at 20–30% charge shown on the fuel gauge

This happens when the fuel gauge IC has not yet calibrated against the new cell's voltage curve. The IC still maps percentage readings against the old cell's degraded profile, so it misreads 20% as zero and triggers shutdown. It is not a fault in the replacement cell — it is a mismatch between the stored calibration data and the new chemistry. Force two full discharge-to-hibernate then full-recharge cycles without interruption. After the second cycle, the fuel gauge IC locks onto the correct voltage curve and the early shutdowns stop.

My P55W-B shows the battery as "0% available (plugged in, not charging)" right after I installed the new cell — what's wrong?

After fitting a new cell, the reported value sometimes mismatches until the fuel gauge IC runs a full calibration cycle. Run one complete discharge to hibernate-cutoff followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100%. After that cycle, the reported Wh figure should align to the actual 55.44Wh rating stored in the new cell's EEPROM.

The P55W-B charges fine but the battery percentage jumps around erratically — drops 15% in minutes then sits still for an hour. How do I fix this?

The fuel gauge IC on this platform needs two to three full calibration cycles against a new cell before its readings stabilise. The old cell's degraded discharge curve was baked into the IC's reference data, and a new 3850mAh cell at 14.4V behaves very differently under load. Do not use the laptop on battery alone for short stints during calibration — let it discharge fully to hibernate each time, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. By the third full cycle, the percentage tracking will be consistent.
