This happens when the fuel gauge IC has not yet calibrated against the new cell's actual chemistry. The percentage reading is based on stale data from the previous battery, so the ProBook's power controller hits a voltage cliff and cuts off before the gauge reads zero. The fix is the same calibration cycle — discharge fully to hibernate cutoff, charge to 100% without interruption. After two to three cycles the fuel gauge tracks accurately and the premature shutdown stops.

Why does HP System Information show the wrong Wh rating after I installed this battery?

The Wh figure displayed in HP System Information pulls from the EEPROM on the battery cell, which stores rated capacity from the manufacturer rather than a live measurement. A fresh replacement cell reports its rated 48.84Wh, but if your BIOS is comparing that against the degraded cell it just replaced, the numbers can appear mismatched or flagged. This is not a fault. Run one full discharge-to-hibernate then charge to 100%, and the BIOS will recalculate and display the correct figure.

The fuel gauge on my ProBook 4230s jumps around erratically for the first few charges — is something wrong with the cell?

Nothing is wrong with the cell. The fuel gauge IC on the ProBook 4230s needs two to three full charge and discharge cycles to map its coulomb-counting algorithm against the new cell's actual chemistry. Until that calibration completes, the percentage reading can skip, stall, or read higher than real state-of-charge. Run two full cycles — discharge to hibernate cutoff each time, then charge uninterrupted to 100% — and the gauge will stabilise.

My ProBook 4230s stops charging at around 80% and won't go higher — is this a faulty battery?

This is almost always a BIOS-controlled charge limit, not a cell fault. HP's battery health management firmware can cap charge at 80% to extend long-term cell life, and this setting persists after a battery swap. Open HP Support Assistant or go into BIOS under Power Management and check whether "Battery Care Function" or a charge limit is enabled. Disable it, then plug in and charge — the battery should charge fully to 100%.
